Break Through Bias- Episode 48

Listen Later

According to the dictionary, "Bias is prejudice in favor or against one thing, group or person in a manner considered to be unfair."

So many of our problems in life and society are based on biases, many of them unconscious. Some biases are harmless, like chocolate or vanilla ice cream. Some are more sinister.

Here are some types in media-

1. Advertising bias- what is shown is geared to attract or keep advertisers happy effectively silencing some issues.

2. Concision bias - reporting only the views that are simple and easily digestible rather than more nuanced or complex ideas

3. Popularity bias - reporting what's trendy to seem "in the loop", avoiding lesser known byt important stories

4. Sensationalism reporting the scandalous or gory to entice "rubberneckers" who might ignore more newsworthy but "boring " stories

and of course there's bias against and for different demographics

men, women, kids, minorities, social classes, genders, educational levels, religious or political affiations, economic or social status, geographical locations etc.

Etc. The truth is people are individuals, and our biases concerning people, situations, or even ourselves can lead us to engage in discrimination, can create misunderstandings and missed opportunities, can literally limit our world to a very narrow sliver of experience. The process of growing is often the process of challenging our biases. Join Gwen Pearce and I as we discuss how we have expanded our horizons using poetry, writing, intuition and other tools from our collective toolboxes that have helped us Break Through Bias and pass that freedom on to others.
