You’re sitting in a room full of senior leaders.
Someone asks a question, and you have a point of view.
But before you speak, you start calculating:
Is that smart enough?
Am I missing something?
Does everyone else already know this?
So you wait.
And then someone else says almost exactly what you were thinking.
Or maybe you do speak, and the moment someone challenges your point, you start explaining, adding context, and giving three more reasons to prove you know what you’re talking about.
Because being smart has probably been one of the most valuable currencies of your career.
But at a certain level, trying to prove how smart you are can actually get in the way of how powerfully you lead.
In this episode of Breaking Free From the Grind, I’m diving in to discuss:
- Why being smart can quietly become something you feel you have to prove - and how overexplaining, overpreparing, second-guessing yourself, and constantly measuring how you’re coming across can keep you from being fully present in the room.
- Why the smartest person in the room isn’t necessarily the most senior leader - because senior leadership isn’t about knowing more than everyone around you. It’s about creating the conditions for the best thinking to emerge and using your judgment to decide what to do with it.
- What self-trust actually looks like in a bigger room - including being willing to say “I don’t know,” ask better questions, let someone else know more than you do, allow yourself to be challenged, and change your mind without treating it as evidence that you shouldn’t have spoken up in the first place.
Because you don’t need to prove you’re the smartest person in the room.
You get to trust that you’re already smart enough to be there.
And once you stop trying to pass the imaginary exam, something changes.
You can listen instead of performing.
You can get curious instead of competing.
You can let someone else have the better idea.
And you can focus your attention on what senior leadership actually requires:
Not knowing everything.
Not being right all the time.
Not proving your value.
But making the room smarter because you’re in it.
