In the very first episode of Breaking Impossibilities, host Justin Townsend gets brutally real about his life growing up on High Street in Oakland, California, surrounded by drugs, violence, domestic chaos, and survival. As a kid he slept on couches, dealt with roaches, had the water cut off, and learned early that the streets paid faster than school.
Justin shares how addiction took over ecstasy, cocaine, meth, and eventually shooting dope leading to homelessness, robberies, car theft, high-speed chases, and a death wish that only got darker after the moment that shattered him: finding his mother dead in the Highland Hospital parking lot (April 6, 2013). Still drowning in grief and addiction, Justin spiraled until one night changed everything April 27, 2017, when a chase, an arrest, and one nurse telling him “you’re going to jail” became the turning point that saved his life.
From Santa Rita Jail to earning his GED, committing to a one-year program, and rebuilding from the ground up, Justin explains how recovery became real when he finally chose himself. Today, he’s 8 years clean, married to his wife Tenaya (02/22/25), and dedicated to empowering youth through speaking, workshops, and community impact—including providing backpacks, haircuts, and support for RYSE youth in Richmond, CA.
This episode is for anyone battling addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, or feeling like their life is “too far gone.” It’s proof that the comeback is possible—even if you’ve been to hell and back.
