Schools in the Kosciusko School District, Attala County School District, and Presbyterian Day School will return to normal schedules on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, following closures due to this week’s ice storm.

The districts were closed Monday and Tuesday because of icy roads, falling trees, and unsafe driving conditions. Attala County Emergency Management Director Danny Townsend said officials confirmed it is now safe for students and staff to return to classrooms.

As of 6 am, 566 customers in Attala County were still without power, 2,732 outages were reported in Holmes County, 393 in Carroll County and 1,464 in Montgomery County.   Statewide, the total number of outages stands at about 100,000.

Governor Reeves is sending the National Guard into the hardest-hit areas in north Mississippi after last weekend’s ice storm…

“We will deploy, at least initially, up to 500 members of the Mississippi National Guard with the expectation that it is possible that those numbers will go up…”

Forward support units and aviation assets will be taking part in the deployment which should be fully operational by Wednesday morning.

The governor says 48 counties have reported damage from the icy weather.  61 shelters and warming centers will be open in 30 counties…

“As we look to the future, we know that we have a lot of work ahead of us…”

A home on Cedar Ln. has been destroyed in a house fire reported around 9 p.m. tonight. When crews arrived, the residence was engulfed in flames.

The Kosciusko Fire Department, Kosciusko Police, and EMS responded to the scene. Bystanders tell Breezy News that everyone is out of the home, and no injuries have been reported.

Firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire at last report. KFD Chief Duane Burdine says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

A structure fire was reported at 9:11 p.m. Sunday, January 26, at a home on Highway 488 near the Madden community. Carthage Fire Department, Madden Volunteer firefighters, and Leake County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene. Deputies reported the structure was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

A house fire reported around 2 o’clock Sunday morning on Chatwin St. in Kosciusko has led to the arrest of three individuals.

Kosciusko Fire Chief Duane Burdine told Breezy News the fire started in a bedroom closet and was contained to that area, limiting damage to the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be incendiary.

Three people were arrested in connection with the incident. Kosciusko Police arrested Kendrick Davis, 38, of Durant, who was charged with first-degree arson and given a $50,000 bond.

Police also arrested Tony Suggs, 51, of Sallis, who was charged with conspiracy to commit arson and given a $10,000 bond.

Eloise Luckett, 67, of Kosciusko, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit arson. Her bond was set at $50,000.

Update: A listener sent in a photo (below) of the cattle in question and the location has been clarified as Hwy 14 near Attala Rd. 5105.

On Sunday, January 25 around 3:15 p.m., Attala Deputies responded to complaints about cows being out in the cold in a pasture near the intersection of Hwy 14 and Hwy 19. The caller stated the cows were out in the freezing weather with no shelter, water, or food. Deputies checked on the cattle and stated they were out enjoying grass and hay and seemed to be just fine.

The coldest weather of the season has settled in and it’ll be in no hurry to leave Mississippi.  Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing today across most of the local area with highs ranging from the mid 20s to the lower 30s.  The state remains under an Extreme Cold Warning until noon Tuesday.  Tonight’s lows are forecast to drop to around 11 degrees in Philadelphia, 10 in Carthage, 7 in Kosciusko and 6 in Durant.  After a brief warm-up, another strong cold front will move in sending temperatures into the 10-15 degree range for Friday night and Saturday night.

Many Mississippians are facing another day without power at their homes or businesses.   As of 3 pm Monday, 1,421 Attala County residents were without electricity, with 4,525 outages in Holmes County, 1,223 in Carroll County, 3,634 in Montgomery County and 631 in Choctaw County.   Statewide, the outages total about 150,000.
