JACKSON, MISS. – The countdown to Christmas has begun! Starting Dec. 14, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will showcase the winning signs of its 12 Days of Christmas digital message sign (DMS) contest.

Over the past month, MDOT has collected over 350 Christmas-themed holiday messages submitted by the public. Entries were submitted across MDOT’s social media platforms including X, Facebook, Instagram and Nextdoor. The messages revolve around Christmas-themed movies, songs and characters.

The 12 winning signs will be posted on social media @MississippiDOT daily starting Dec. 14, through Christmas Day, Dec. 25. You can also view the daily winners by following the hashtag #MDOTs12DaysofChristmas, and of course, by viewing DMS boards on highways across Mississippi during the 12-day period leading up to Christmas Day.

“We appreciate everyone who participated in this year’s 12 Days of Christmas sign contest. Now it’s time to practice what we preach,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Buckle up, eliminate driving distractions like cell phones, and always drive safe and sober. Let’s all do our part to make sure we all get to and from our holiday destinations safely.”

Traffic safety messages appear on DMS boards along highways and interstates throughout Mississippi. Any local emergency messages and traffic updates automatically override scheduled messages on the DMS boards.

DURANT, Miss.–A woman was fatally shot in Durant Sunday.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard confirmed to Boswell Media that the woman was shot on Hayes St.

She was identifed as Jessica Parks.

Information on what led up to the shooting is yet to be released by Durant Police.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Attala County deputies helped find an Amazon delivery driver who was lost and ended up in a ditch and stranded early Sunday morning.

The woman called 911 shortly after midnight. She did not know where she was and was able to provide a description with some landmarks, included a water tower and a pond.

The dispatcher and deputies worked together using the available cell phone data to narrow the search to the area of Attala Rd 5115, which is off of Hwy. 19 to the southeast of Kosy.

After a search that lasted about 45 minutes a deputy used sirens so the woman could listen and tell the dispatcher when she heard them coming.

She was located around 1:15 a.m.

A wrecker had to be called. She was not only stuck in a sitch, but the van was buried up to the frame.

No injuries were reported.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–People who were in Walmart Sunday morning in Kosciusko experienced a power outage, as did many other people in that area.

Entergy acknowledged the power outage, which was just after 9:30 a.m.

The cause of the outage was not clear. By 10:15 a.m. Entergy had located thew problem and had begun working on it.

TUPELO, Miss. – Construction-related closure of the Natchez Trace Parkway between Mississippi Highway 413 (milepost 181) and U.S. Highway 82 (milepost 204) in Choctaw and Webster counties will remain in effect longer than originally anticipated.

The section of the parkway, including the Jeff Busby Campground and day use area, has been closed since June 9, 2025, to allow for the removal and replacement of failed pavement and culverts. While the project was initially expected to be completed by the end of summer, unforeseen site conditions and weather delays have extended the timeline. A definitive reopening date is not available at this time. Construction will continue into 2026.

“We understand this extended closure is frustrating for travelers and local communities,” said Natchez Trace Parkway Superintendent Wendy Ross. “The safety of visitors, staff, and construction crews remains our priority with this project. We are committed to completing the work as safely and efficiently as possible.”

The closure affects all traffic, including vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. A signed detour remains in place between Mississippi Highway 413 and U.S. Highway 82. While the detour route itself is approximately 40 miles long, it adds an estimated 10 miles and 15 minutes of additional travel time compared to the parkway route.

Project Background:

This closure is the first phase of a larger, multi-phase effort to rehabilitate 83 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi, funded by approximately $130.6 million from the Great American Outdoors Act’s Legacy Restoration Fund and the Federal Highway Administration’s Nationally Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects Program. Construction is occurring from mileposts 121 to 204 and includes roadway rehabilitation, culvert and bridge repairs, and safety improvements.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A two-car wreck was reported Friday evening in Kosciusko.

The wreck was at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Dr. and Knox Rd. When the call first went out to police it was stated that there were no know injuries.

Shortly after arriving on the scene at 5:37, an officer called for an ambulance.

The nature of the injury or injuries was not disclosed.

A wrecker was sent to pick up one of the cars.
