On Sunday, October 19, Attala County first responders were kept busy with several fire and crash calls.

Just after 1 a.m., Attala County Fire Department was called to Williamsville Rd. at Hwy 35 S for a blown transformer that sparked a small grass fire. The fire was out when firefighters arrived.

Around 4:19 a.m., Attala County Fire Department, Deputies, and EMS responded to Attala Rd. 4202 (Youth Center Rd.) near Hwy 12, where a vehicle struck a tree. One person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. While responding, first responders reported several trees down across the county.

At 6:40 a.m., deputies were sent to another crash on Attala Rd. 4167 where a vehicle hit a tree; no injuries were reported.

Later that morning, at 11:15 a.m., Attala County Fire and Carmack Volunteers responded to a grass fire on Attala Rd. 3102 caused by a downed power line. The fire was out when firefighters arrived.

The Attala County Fire Department was called to Attala Rd. 2252 for a small woods fire at 12:40 p.m., which was mostly extinguished before they arrived. Crews ensured the remaining flames were fully put out.

Former Kosciusko Whippet football player Michael Harmon spoke with Voice of the Whippets Breck Riley during halftime of the Greenwood/Kosciusko game Friday, Oct. 17.

Harmon graduated from Kosciusko in 1979. He went on the play football and baseball at Ole Miss.

He was drafted by the New York Jets in the 11th round of the 1983 NFL draft.

After his playing career, he worked in law enforcement for 27 years with the University of Mississippi police department.

The Ethel Tigers defeated Noxapater 30-26 in a key week 8 Region 5-1A showdown with playoff seeding on the line.

The Tigers’ offense put up 331 total yards on the night, 218 of which were rushing yards.

With just 1:29 left in the game, quarterback Jake Newman led the Tigers’ offense 70 yards down the field to get the game winning score, an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Farmer.

Noxapater had a chance to take reclaim the lead on its ensuing drive, but Matthew Arnold intercepted a pass in the red zone to seal the victory for the Tigers.

Head Coach Junior Graham called the game an “instant Ethel classic.”

“Our kids had every opportunity to quit, but refused,” said Graham.

Newman led the Tigers in rushing, carrying the ball 17 times for 76 yards and 1 touchdown. Newman also went 6/9 for 113 yards and a touchdown.  Arnold was the team’s leading receiver, hauling in 5 catches for 59 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers were led by Kameron Fortenberry with 13 tackles, Taylon May with 11 tackles, Jayden Ferguson with 8.

The Tigers will be back on the road this Friday (Oct. 24) to face Nanih Waiya, with a potential home playoff game on the line.

PICKENS, Miss.–A Holmes County man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of first degree murder in a killing that was caught on suveillance video.

Jordan Perry, 28, was shot to death at the Citgo on Hwy. 51 in Pickens, Sept. 14, 2024.

Melvin Day was accused of the murder and arrested. During the investigation police discovered that the incident was caught on the service station’s surveillance system.

That video was used at last week’s trial and Day was convicted. The trial lasted two days.

Day was sentenced to life in prison, plus 10 years.
