This is Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Mississippi– and the National Weather Service is urging us to get ready for the state’s secondary tornado season which begins in November…

“Make sure people know things about severe weather, know the difference between watches and warnings, have multiple ways to receive their warnings and have a plan in place to protect your family..”

Michael Hill at the Weather Service in Jackson says we didn’t have to worry about a lot of bad weather during the summer, but now that fall is here, the severe storms could sneak up on us…

“Our first event could be a really volatile one and people are caught off guard. (They say) ‘Oh man, it’s been quiet for a while,’ and then they get, you know, bulldozed by an EF-3 or 4 tornado..”

The highlight of this week’s activities is this morning’s statewide tornado drill, a chance for people to practice what they would do if a real storm were headed their way…

“I don’t know exactly how much participation we get, but we do advertise it, we make sure everybody knows that, around 9:15, please go through your plans..”

So far this year, there’ve been 73 tornadoes in Mississippi.

The Ethel Tigers volleyball team has advanced to the third round of the MHSAA Playoffs.

The Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals following a 3-0 win over Richton Tuesday night.

The next game for the Tigers will be against Stringer. That game will be in Ethel, Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:00 pm.

Attala County has implemented a burn ban, effective immediately through November 6, according to Attala County Fire Chief Tim Cox.

Use these items as described by their manufacturer, safely away from combustible materials, and never left unattended. Dispose of them properly after use.

Charcoal grill briquettes are of great concern. After use, always let the coals cool completely and douse in water before disposing of them in a metal container. The residual ash should be cold to the touch before disposal.

The Kosciusko High School Big Red Band brought home two first place trophies over the weekend.

The band competed at Northeast MS Community College, performing its 2025 marching show “Villain.”

At the competition, both the band and percussion placed 1st Place Overall in 4A.

Next up for Big Red is the Regional Competition, this Saturday, Oct. 11 at Neshoba Central High School.

In the battle for Attala County Friday night, the Ethel Tigers came out victorious 28-14 over the McAdams Bulldogs.

The Tigers’ offense put up 326 total yards on the night, with most of it (311) coming from its rushing attack.

Quarterback Jake Newman led the Tigers in rushing, carrying the ball 10 times for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Tigers were led by Taylon May with 11 tackles, while Cameron Farmer and Jayden Ferguson both had 9.

On special teams, Matthew Arnold returned a punt for a touchdown.

Head Coach Junior Graham said that defense and special teams was a big part of the Tigers’ success.

“We tackled well and were able to put special teams points on the board. Matthew Arnold’s 35-yard punt return was huge.”

The Tigers will be back on the road this Friday (Oct. 10) to face Leake County.

The Kosciusko Whippets and Ethel Tigers volleyball teams have both advanced to the second round of the MHSAA Playoffs.

Both teams swept their opening round games Saturday, Kosciusko 3-0 vs Byhalia and Ethel 3-0 vs South Delta.

Next up for the Whippets is North Pontotoc. That game will be in Kosciusko Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6:00 pm.
