Greek Fest ’25 Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club.

This free event, sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (Eta Eta Sigma Chapter), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Rho Nu Zeta Chapter, promises a day of fun with free food, games, and vendors.

It’s time to “Meet the Bulldogs.”

The event, held at McAdams High School Friday, Aug. 15, will feature a packed schedule beginning with doors opening at 6:00 PM.

The evening will kick off with introductions of the Junior High Football team at 6:30 PM, followed by the Volleyball team at 6:40 PM.

At 6:45 PM, the cheerleaders will take the stage with a performance and individual introductions.

The highlight of the night, the High School Football team introduction, is set for 6:55 PM, where players will be announced individually, and coaches will share season goals.

The event will conclude with mini-football team drills and 7-on-7 practice starting at 7:20 PM.

Ebenezer native Patrick Sample has been named the new chief of police at the Goodman Campus of Holmes Community College.

“I am excited to announce the promotion of Patrick Sample as our new Chief of Police,” Goodman Campus Vice President Andy Wood said. “Patrick brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. We are confident that we will not miss a beat with him following Chief Joey Merriman.”

Sample, a Kosciusko High School graduate, graduated from the Mississippi Delta Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy in Moorhead in 2016. Sample came to Holmes in 2014 working in both security and with the grounds department until becoming a police officer in 2016. He was elevated to sergeant in 2018.

He received his associate’s degree in criminal justice from Holmes Community College in 2021.

In his spare time, he enjoys riding his motorcycle, wine making and traveling. He is the son of Sam and Jamie Sample of Ebenezer. He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gluckstadt.

The driver of a pickup truck was killed late Wednesday night when he ran off U-S 82 near Stewart and crashed into a ditch.   Charles H. Martin, 66, of Coffeeville was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

The Ethel Tiger Football Team practices are in full swing, preparing for the upcoming season.

The team is in need of donations of water, old towels, pickle juice, and Liquid IV. All donations can be dropped off at the school. The Tigers appreciate your support!

Also, junior high and high school football parents are asked to sign up to sell hamburgers for the Football Booster Club.

When is a hurricane a good thing for Mississippi?  When it stays away from the Gulf but still helps to suck some of the humidity out of the atmosphere around here. Eric Carpenter at the National Weather Service in Jackson explains how Erin could help make conditions in this area a little more comfortable…

“Even though it’s going to be well to the east of us and moving through the Atlantic Ocean, on the back side of this system where the winds are more northerly, that would actually bring in some drier air into our area.”

And he says even if temperatures remain hot…

“Drier air would definitely help relieve some of the heat stress that we’re dealing with right now.”

All of this is based on the forecast that Erin, now a tropical storm but soon to become a hurricane, will turn out to sea and allow that drier air to start filtering into Mississippi by the middle of next week.

Holmes County is back under a heat advisory today with a heat index of up to 110 expected.  Elsewhere in the local area, the heat index could approach 105.

A countywide remapping project currently under way in Attala County.

According to Attala County Emergency Management Director Danny Townsend, the project will enhance 911 response accuracy and update district lines for elections, supervisor beats, school districts, legislative districts, and more.

The remapping will be conducted using a specialized truck, similar to the one pictured, which may be seen around the county.

Townsend wants to reassure the public that the truck’s presence is for legitimate purposes and urged residents not to be alarmed.
