Members of Attala County Future Farmers of America members participated in the 92nd Mississippi FFA State Convention  June 3 – 5.

Over 600 FFA members and guests convened at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg for several days of workshops, sponsor acknowledgements, college recruiting, and state officer elections.

Attala County FFA was represented by members from all three local high schools and even the newly charted Ethel Junior FFA Chapter.

Jonathan Talley, Devid Lambert, and Baylee Self attend EHS. Luis Rodreguez and Jaliya Henry attend KHS. David Haron attends MHS. Members from the junior chapter at EHS, included Sarah Cessna, Brystal Allison, and River Hutchinson.

Attala FFA was recognized twice at this year’s function.The chapter’s Student Adviser Luis Rogrgrez received 2nd place at the state level in the Spanish Creed Speaking Contest. In addition to that, President of the Ethel Junior FFA Chapter, Ava Smith, received 3rd place at the state level for Junior Creed Speaking.

As they complete this school year, Attala FFA would like to thank all of their school administrators, local businesses, and parents for their support.

Thanks to Principal Newman who allowed for the chartering of Ethel’s junior chapter. Thanks again to B-MO, Breezynews, and Kosciusko Tractor Supply for helping to raise funds to make the convention trip possible.

The Attala County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent surge in scam attempts targeting locals through text messages, emails, and social media.

According to reports, scammers are impersonating the Mississippi Department of Motor Vehicles and threatening legal action over unpaid tolls or penalties. Authorities stress that these messages are fraudulent.

Residents are urged not to share personal or financial information, click suspicious links, or send payments—especially via gift cards, a common scam tactic.

Anyone who receives such a message should report it to local law enforcement, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, the Federal Trade Commission, or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.

TUPELO, Miss. – On Monday, June 9 at 2 p.m., the National Park Service will close Natchez Trace Parkway from Mississippi Highway 413 (MP 181) to U.S. Highway 82 (MP 204) in Choctaw and Webster counties in Mississippi. The last night to camp at Jeff Busby campground is Sunday, June 8.

The road will be closed to all traffic, including vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, as construction crews work to repair failing areas of the parkway. A signed detour will be in place between Mississippi Highway 413 (MP 181) and U.S. Highway 82 (MP 204) to navigate around the closure. Travelers can expect about 15 minutes (10 miles) added to their drive. The closure is necessary to provide for safety of workers and visitors while the parkway undergoes full removal of failed sections of pavement and culverts.

Additionally, Jeff Busby campground and day use area will remain closed while construction is underway. The last night for campers to stay overnight is Sunday, June 8. All campers and day users must vacate the Jeff Busby site by noon on Monday, June 9.

The closure is anticipated to last through summer.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–One person was detained Friday night after a call reporteing a truck and trailer with a lawnmower on it sitting in the middle of the highway.

That happened just before 11 p.m.

The dispatcher was able to hear over the phone that the person responsible was intoxicated.

Attala County deputies reported taking the person into custody and that person may have also had a warrant out for his arrest. That was not confirmed.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A two-car wreck was reported Friday evening near Kosciusko.

That happened about 5:30 p.m. at highways 19 and 35 south.

While it was initially reported there were no injuries one person did complain of some pain once deputies arrived.

One persxon was taken to the hospital via ambulance.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol was notified and took over the investigation of the wreck just after 7 p.m.

One person involved had a warrant out for his arrest and was taken to the Leake County Jail.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–With undertones of Armageddon, continuous news reports of disunity and an ambivalent attitude toawrd God, the world can seem like a place devoid of love. But, the confines of the Guitar Academy’s performance stage contained no such grim scenes Saturday night and when Divine Purpose, the winners of the Mississippi Music Showcase, climbed on the stage and began singing, the packed room was alight in the glow of the love of Christ.

“Love Medley”, was meticulously crafted by a group of well-trained musicians from central Mississippi, and contained pieces of well-known hymns, arranged into a delightful pattern that built to a crescendo.

“Most of these are musicians in their own churches and their own communities,” said Danieal Powell, of Yazoo City, appointed spokesperson for the group. “They’ve been doing praise and worsjip for years and years.”

He said the band and singers are all trained, most having been college-educated in the art.

“When we get together for practive we really don’t ever practice because we just love each other,” said Powell.

While the singers easily transitioned from soft unison vocals to voluminous and even soaring harmonies, the band provided an understated, but well-honed backing of keyboard bass, strings, organ and piano and mostly muted, arpeggiated guitar accompaniment.

The group originated when one of the music directors, identified by Powell as “Willie Mack”, needed a group top help him finish a Christmas project.

While the group hasn’t toured together in the formate in which they became champions Saturday, Powell said they are open to it and would love to find a way to spend the $1,000 prize to help them network and spread the love of Christ through their musical gifts.

Powell said the name of the group itself dictates that they share.

“That name alone describes who we are as individuals and Christians and servants here on Earth,” he said.

Kosciusko, MS – On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Divine Purpose was announced as the winner of Boswell Media’s Mississippi Music Showcase following a thrilling live performance at The Guitar Academy in downtown Kosciusko.

The competition, hosted by Boswell Media, showcased Mississippi’s finest musical talent, drawing a diverse crowd of music enthusiasts to the heart of Kosciusko.

Divine Purpsoe, a gospel, soul band from Jackson, MS captivated the audience and judges with their performance of “Love Melody.”

“We are thrilled to celebrate Divine Purpsoe as the winner of the Mississippi Music Showcase,” said Melissa Boswell Townsend, General Manager at Boswell Media. “Their talent and passion embody the spirit of Mississippi’s vibrant music scene and history.”

The event featured performances by 10 finalists, hailing from all parts of The Magnolia State, each vying for the top spot and the $1,000 grand prize.

Additionally, The Powell Family, from Philadelphia, MS, was named People’s Choice Award winner and took home a $200 cash prize.

The night opened with a performance by The Whispering Trees, featuring 2023 Mississippi Songwriter of the Year Naomi Raines and her husband Joey Raines.

Judges for the Mississippi Music Showcase were Muscle Shoals Music Historian Johnny Belew, radio personality and singer/songwriter Chris Davis (Yazoo City), and Band Director Courtney Sanders (Olive Branch).

The evening was filled with unforgettable performances, community spirit, and a shared love for music.

The Attala County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Kenneth Ray McBride and Sammie Earl Lee who are wanted in connection with an aggravated assault that occurred recently in the Ethel area.

The incident took place on Attala Road 4213 and began as a two-vehicle crash. Authorities say a verbal altercation followed the crash, then shots were fired and one person was injured.

Sammie Earl Lee and Kenneth Ray McBride, pictured above, are wanted on charges related to the incident.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts is urged to contact the Attala County Sheriff’s Department at (662) 289-5556 or their local law enforcement agency. All tips will be kept confidential.

Kosciusko City Hall will remain open through 5:00 pm today (Friday, June 6).

City Clerk Michelle Quesnot said the extended hours are for voters that need to rectify an absentee or affidavit ballot from Tuesday’s election.

Affidavit ballots are cast by individuals whose names do not appear on the poll books, often due to address discrepancies, or who did not have a proper Voter ID. These voters are allowed to cast a ballot under the condition that they resolve the issue within five business days following the election.

Since Feb. 1 2024, City Hall has closed at noon on Friday.
