Two Kosciusko School District administrators were charged Friday for failure to report by a mandated reporter.  MS Code § 43-21-353 (2024) was made a law in 2024 (Mississippi Code § 43-21-353 (2024) – Duty to inform state agencies and officials; duty to inform individual about whom report has been made of specific allegations :: 2024 Mississippi Code :: U.S. Codes and Statutes :: U.S. Law :: Justia ).

Suzanne Crosby and Lindsay Dickerson were charged with a misdemeanor offense.  According to officials, both have posted a cash bond, and a court date is set.

The Kosciusko School District recently became aware of an incident involving two students on the playground of Kosciusko Lower Elementary that was concerning and required immediate attention. 

Due to the age of the students and the sensitive nature of the situation, details are limited.  There is an active investigation of between the district and local law enforcement officials. 

“After we were made aware of the situation, the Kosciusko School District Police Department requested the help of the Kosciusko Police Department, so that we could fully investigate this with the utmost integrity. In the meantime, we are also working in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Education. The safety, protection, and development of every child in our care remain our highest priorities.”  Dr. Zach Bost, Superintendent of Education. 

“The Kosciusko School District has been extremely cooperative with us in this case.  We are working closely with the administration, the KSD Police Dept, and the Mississippi Department of Education.”  Chief Greg Collins, Kosciusko Police Dept.

Representatives from the district told Breezynews that they are working closely with KPD to ensure the safety, protection, and development of every child in the district.

Kosciusko Whippets baseball player Barrett Kuhn signed Monday morning to continue his baseball career at Holmes Community College.

Kuhn played catcher of for the Whippets and helped lead the team to several playoff appearances during his tenure.

Kuhn was joined at the signing by his parents, teammates, and KHS baseball coaches.

The City of Kosciusko now has two new weather/tornado sirens.

The new sirens have been placed on 4th Avenue near Kosciusko Upper Elementary and on West Jefferson Street near the Attala County Maintenance barn and Aponaug Park.

Aldermen approved the sirens during a January board meeting, with Mayor Tim Kyle explaining that the sirens were awarded through a grant.

“This was actually a FEMA grant application, but it’s being administered through MEMA, through the state of Mississippi,” said Kyle.

The siren at Upper Elementary is already fully operational with the other siren to be activated this week.

“We hope with these two added sirens that everybody in the community would be able to hear a warning siren,” said Kyle. “…it’s just something that hopefully will help save lives if we ever have a tornado that is moving into our community.”

McAdams High School is proud to announce the hiring of T’Darryl Grays as its new head football coach.

Grays’ appointment was officially approved by the Attala County Schools Board of Education during its meeting Thursday night.

Grays brings a wealth of experience to McAdams, having most recently served as the secondary coach at Hinds Community College.

Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at East Mississippi Community College, where he helped lead the Lions to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) playoffs.

During his time at EMCC, the Lions defense ranked first in the conference.

He also spent three seasons coaching at Mississippi Delta Community College.

Grays is a native of Picayune and a former three-year starter at Picayune Memorial High School, where he helped lead the team to a 30-6 record. He went on to play collegiate football at Southeastern Louisiana University, appearing in 30 games for the Lions.

“We are fortunate to have Coach Grays leading our football program at McAdams High School,” said Kenyon Ross, Athletic Director. “His knowledge of the game and his ability to help student-athletes reach the next level will be a tremendous asset to our program and to our students.”

EDINBURG, Miss.–A stabbing was reported Friday afternoon about 5:15 at the “houses on stilts” in Edinburg. Leake County deputies responded.

The man who was reported to have done the stabbing was walking away from the scene wearing a black shirt and tan shorts.

He was described as a Hispanic male, walking on Hwy. 427.

Deputies were able to find the man and apprehend him.

ETHEL, Miss.–Four wheelers were a problem again Friday night in Ethel on Attala Rd. 5238 near Ethel.

A woman called and said people were riding four-wheelers up and down the road and doing donuts.

A deputy found the four-wheelers, telling the drivers and riders that if they were caught riding up and down the road the again they would be towed. The drivers agreed to head home.

Last weekend a four-wheeler hit a trailer after several were spotted speeding up and down the road near Ethel.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A two-car wreck was reported Friday night on Hwy. 12 near Sallis, between the Dollar General and the day care center.

The call came in about 7:45 with unknown injuries.

Both vehicles were off the road and about a quarter mile apart.

An ambulance was dispatched for one injury. The person who was injured had wounds on his elbow and head.

That person was taken to the hospital in Kosciusko.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A tree was reported down on Hwy. 43 north at Skating Rink Rd., Friday afternoon about 6:15. The tree was reported blocking both lanes.

After deputies were dispatched another radio call said there had been several 911 calls regarding the tree and that a person called saying the tree had fallen on their car.

That person was out of the car, but an ambulance was dispatched for possible injuries.

The Highway Patrol was also dispatched to the scene.

The tree also took down a power line and Central Electric was notified.

Second Tree Down

Another tree was reported hanging over one lane of Hwy. 35 at the Carroll County line.

When deputies arrived they reported that the tree was likely to fall and that MDOT was needed. It was discussed whether the road should be shut down because of the danger from the tree.
