The post season is here for several local baseball and softball teams.

MHSAA playoffs kick off this week and weekend.

Both Kosciusko baseball and Ethel softball will be No. 1 seeds in the postseason due to winning their respective districts.

Kosciusko Softball earned a No. 2 seed after splitting the district championship with Caledonia, while the Ethel Tigers baseball team will be a No. 4 seed.

All four teams will begin play this week, with softball getting the action started on Thursday.

In Leake County, the public is being asked to help in locating a missing man.

23-year-old Isaiah Mundy was last seen at his home in Thomastown on March 20.

His family says it hasn’t heard from him since.

Anyone with information about him is asked to contact the Leak County Sheriff’s Office at 601-267-7361.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 13, Kosciusko Police responded to a burglary alarm at Mahavir, LLC, a business located across from the Attala County Coliseum on Hwy 12 E.

Officers arrived to find a damaged side door and after reviewing surveillance footage, discovered that two individuals had broken in and stolen cigarettes and a cash drawer containing over $400.

The thieves attempted to steal the business’s ATM by backing a truck up to the building and using a chain, but was unsuccessful.

Investigators were able to trace the vehicle to Medgar Evers Blvd. in Jackson. With the assistance of the Capitol Police, the vehicle was located at Hollywood Ave. and a search warrant was executed. Multiple items tied to the burglary were recovered.

Collins says Donald Samuel, 35, and James Hinton, 31, both of Jackson, were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Commercial Business. Bond was set at $150,000. Authorities are still searching for two more suspects.

Police Chief Greg Collins credited technology and inter-agency cooperation for the quick arrests and extended thanks to the Capitol Police for their support.

Rev. Gary Glazier from Redbud Springs Cornerstone Church visited The BreckFast Show Tuesday morning to preview this year’s performance of “His Last Days: The Passion Play.”

This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 17 – Saturday, April 19.

So, how many tornadoes have touched down in Mississippi this year?  Officially, the National Weather Service has confirmed 65….

“That’s an exceptional amount for the state of Mississippi, for even a whole year.”

Chad Entremont at the Weather Service office in Jackson is aware of reports from other weather-tracking groups claiming that we’ve had as many as 95 tornadoes.  But he says those numbers are based on preliminary information called local storm reports…

“For, say, a longer or larger tornado, we may get five local storm reports for that one particular tornado (warning) that we put out because it impacted different locations across one or two counties.  But, that would give you a total of five preliminary reports.  And then when we do the final (damage) survey, it’s just essentially one tornado.  So, that’s why you can get a different count or numbers.”

But regardless of which criteria you might use, and whether it’s 65 or 95…

“I’m extremely confident that is, at this point, the most for any state in the country.”

Last year, Mississippi had 85 confirmed tornadoes and 61 the year before.  But those numbers pale in comparison to 2022, which was a record year with 136 tornadoes hitting the state.

The City of Kosciusko has announced a planned clean-up day.

Clean-up day will be Saturday, April 19 from 8:00 am – noon.

All trash can be taken to the Waste Management garbage can that will be onsite at the Attala County Coliseum.

See the attached flyer for a list of items not allowed to be placed in a dumpster.

A motorcycle and car crashed head-on Sunday afternoon on Hwy 35 North near Old Vaiden Rd. Just after 5:30 p.m.

EMS, Attala County Fire Department, MS Hwy Patrol, & Attala Deputies responded to the scene.

The driver of the car was uninjured but the driver of the motorcycle sustained serious damage to their left leg.

A passerby stopped and rendered aid by tying a tourniquet on the injured leg until first responders could arrive.

The driver of the motorcycle was transported by ambulance with serious injuries.

MS Hwy Patrol is investigating the crash.

CARTHAGE, Miss.–Just as a chase was coming to an end near Wlnut Grove, deputies were called to another part of Leake County for a wreck Saturday night.

The one-vehicle wreck was at Gallilee Rd. and Laurel Hill Rd. and was reported just before 9:15.

The caller said the truck had rolled over and six people were inside. The caller said no one was hurt and they were all getting out as deputies were on the way.

Deputies and firefighters from Madden, were dispatched to the scene.

The driver may have been from Kosciusko, according to police radfio traffic.

KOSCIUISKO, Miss.–Attala County deputies were called to Attala Rd. 5215 Saturday evening. The caller told dispatchers that a female had “torn up the house” and the caller feared for everyone’s safety.

That was shortly after 5:30

Deputies arrived and radioed back that all was good shortly after arriving.
