Kosciusko High School standout CJ Sandifer has been named one of Mississippi’s top returning high school running backs heading into the 2026 football season by The Clarion-Ledger.

The newspaper included Sandifer on its preseason watch list and fan poll featuring many of the state’s top rushers from both the MHSAA and MAIS.

Sandifer rushed for 1,440 yards and 21 total touchdowns during the 2025 season and currently holds an offer from Alcorn State.

Fans can vote for who they believe is the state’s top returning running back. Voting is open now and fans may vote once per hour per device through noon Saturday, July 4.

What would you want people 50 years from now to know about life in Mid-Mississippi?

Janelle Snyder with the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System joined The BreckFast Show Tuesday morning to talk about the “Voices of Mid-Mississippi: A Community Time Capsule,” community project which will be sealed this week at the Attala County Library.

The project is collecting handwritten notes and small mementos from across five counties as part of the America250 celebration, preserving a snapshot of local life to be opened in 2076 during the America 300 observance.

Snyder noted that the project is made possible in part by the Mississippi Humanities Council through grants from the state of Mississippi.

As part of the project, Boswell Media also contributed several items to be included in the capsule. Each staff member submitted an official business card sealed in a Boswell Media envelope. The group also added station promotional items representing its local brands, including a Breezy 103 fan, a Cruisin’ 98.3 car pen, and a Kicks 96.7 koozie. Breeck Riley also included an “On Air” sign recovered from an old radio studio in Carthage, adding a piece of local broadcasting history to the collection.

Library officials say the capsule is designed to capture everyday life in Mid-Mississippi—from community voices and leadership messages to small artifacts that reflect local culture and identity.

The time capsule will be sealed during a ceremony at noon on Thursday at the Attala County Library and will remain preserved until its reopening in 2076.

The heat advisory continues for most of this area.   Heat index readings between 106 and 110 degrees are expected.  And in part of western Mississippi including Holmes County, the heat advisory has been upgraded to an extreme heat warning with heat index values which could exceed 110.

The National Weather Service heat index forecast for today:  as high as 111 in Durant, 108 in Kosciusko and Carthage and 106 in Philadelphia.

Some showers and thunderstorms will be possible moving from east to west, meaning that any chance of relief from the heat will be slow to arrive in the western counties.   Isolated severe storms with damaging wind gusts will be possible across the state from mid-afternoon through the evening.

Kosciusko welcomed a new hands-on educational experience today as the Kosciusko Attala Partnership and Mississippi Children’s Museum officially held a ribbon cutting for Rocky’s House, a 600-square-foot traveling exhibit.

Developed through the Mississippi Children’s Museum and its early literacy initiative Talk from the Start, the exhibit is designed to help children build foundational language skills through interactive play—and just as importantly, to encourage adults to engage with them throughout the experience.

It is housed at The Refuge, a building on E Jefferson Street owned by First Baptist Church that has been made available for the project.

Emily Hoff, Executive Director of the Mississippi Children’s Museum, said the project is deeply personal to the organization and directly tied to early childhood development research.

“This exhibit is based around our Talk from the Start campaign, which is all about the importance of talking from zero to five,” Hoff said. “Children need to hear 21,000 words a day during that time period in their life in order to be ready to read when they get to kindergarten and first grade.”

Rather than focusing only on children, Hoff emphasized that much of the exhibit is intentionally designed to guide parents and caregivers.

“You will see prompts that aren’t necessarily for the children. They are for the adults and the caregivers in their lives to ask them questions, to help them explore the space,” she said.

The exhibit features multiple themed, imagination-driven environments intended for children roughly ages 0 to 8.

Visitors of all ages were present at today’s ribbon cutting, including Mississippi House Speaker Jason White, who played a key role in helping bring organizers together to make the project happen in Kosciusko.

Rocky’s House will remain in Kosciusko through August 2 and is free to the public. Hours have been updated following today’s announcement: the exhibit will be open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Hoff also encouraged families to take advantage of the traveling exhibit locally, and then visit the permanent installation in Jackson.

“Rocky has a permanent house at the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson, so we hope that all our friends in Kosciusko will come out and visit this, but then come join us this summer in our Jackson location and see Rocky’s permanent house,” she said.

The traveling exhibit is part of a broader effort to expand early literacy engagement across Mississippi, blending education with hands-on play in a way organizers hope will leave a lasting impact on children and families.

More information on programming and volunteer opportunities is expected to be released throughout the exhibit’s run.

A new hands-on learning experience focused on early childhood literacy is coming to Kosciusko this summer through a partnership between the Kosciusko Attala Partnership and the Mississippi Children’s Museum.

During an interview on The BreckFast Show, KAP Executive Director Mary Catherine Dean announced that the community will soon host Rocky’s House, a 600-square-foot traveling exhibit designed to encourage early literacy and language development through play-based learning.

The exhibit, developed by the Mississippi Children’s Museum and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, will officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:00 am, Monday, June 29. While the exhibit will not be open to the public that first day, the event will feature special guests, including MS Speaker of the House Jason White, who played a key role in helping connect organizers with the project partners.

Rocky’s House will then remain open through Aug. 2, giving families throughout Attala County and surrounding areas several weeks to experience the interactive exhibit. Admission is completely free to the public.

The exhibit will operate Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers and staff will help run daily activities, and organizers are still welcoming community members who may want to assist during the exhibit’s run.

Rocky’s House will be located at The Refuge, a space on the campus of First Baptist Church that has been made available for the project through local partnership and support.

The exhibit’s arrival follows a busy weekend in downtown Kosciusko as part of the America 250 celebration, which will include parades, games, live performances, food trucks, historical demonstrations, fireworks, and community events centered around the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Dean said the goal of Rocky’s House is to provide an engaging, educational space where young children can learn through hands-on exploration while families enjoy a free, accessible community resource.

The Kosciusko Attala Partnership celebrated America’s 250th anniversary Saturday with an afternoon of family-friendly activities, entertainment and a ceremony honoring local veterans.

The afternoon featured activities for all ages, including a Kid & Pet Parade, games, historical demonstrations, a cornhole tournament, food trucks, live entertainment, and a classic car display by the Kosy Kruisers. Performances from The Dance Company and Kosy Pops entertained visitors before the celebration concluded with a fireworks show Saturday night.

One of the day’s highlights was a Veterans Recognition ceremony honoring local men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Mississippi Speaker of the House Jason White delivered the keynote address, thanking veterans for their service and sacrifice.

“We get to enjoy living in the greatest country in the world because of your sacrifices,” White said. “This community thanks you.”

White, whose wife serves on Mississippi’s America 250 Commission, said he has attended similar celebrations across the state in recent weeks. While many communities have done a good job commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary, he said Kosciusko stood out by making veterans a central part of the celebration.

“We got it right here tonight by honoring the actual folks who make all of this possible,” White said, noting that many similar events have celebrated the country’s anniversary but have not placed the same emphasis on recognizing veterans.

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.–The 137th Neshoba County Dair is over, and without any major incidents, said Sheriff Eric Clark.

Though a few minor incidents of theft and at least one lost child were reported, no one was reported hurt and Clark made a Facebook post commending the community and visitors.

“We are extremely proud that the 137th Neshoba County Fair has been remarkably safe. We applaud the cooperation of our fairgoers and are grateful that there have been no major incidents and no significant motor vehicle crashes attributed to Fair attendance. That is a testament to the responsible actions of the thousands of people who have attended this year’s Fair,” he said.

SALLIS, Miss.–A car was found wrecked near Sallis when an iPhone accident alert notified Attala County dispatchers of the wreck. But, when deputies and volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene they did not find anyone around.

That was just before 11 p.m. on Attala Rd. 4116, near the intersection of Hwy. 429.

About 20 minutes later the owner was found, but it was not clear where.

No injuuries were reported and a wrecker was called to retrieve the vehicle.
