Occasionally heavy rain is forecast in Mississippi again today but the National Weather Service expects the heaviest amounts to fall along and south of I-20.  Those areas can expect 1-2 inches with a few locations getting up to 3 inches. Locally, NWS is forecasting from a tenth to a quarter inch in the northern portions of the local area and between a half-inch and one inch in the southern portions through tonight.

Ethel High School softball’s playoff game planned for Thursday night has been postponed.

Game 1 of the series will now be played Saturday, May 2, at Stringer.

No other changes to the series have been announced yet.

Just before 5 PM on Wednesday evening, a vehicle rolled over on Hwy 43 S. ACFD Chief Tim Cox says it’s unknown if the driver was thrown from the vehicle, or if they crawled free. When first responders arrived on scene, the car was smoking, and the driver was walking around. They have been confirmed to have only minor injuries. It is still unclear what caused the crash.

A former Attala County standout is getting his shot at professional football.

Percy Lewis, a Sallis native and McAdams High School graduate, has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Lewis, an offensive lineman known for his massive size at roughly 6-foot-7 and nearly 390 pounds, was not selected during the draft but quickly found an opportunity at the professional level.

He most recently played for the Ole Miss Rebels football, capping off a college career that also included stops at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Mississippi State, and Auburn.

The Canadian Football League often serves as a proving ground for players looking to continue their careers and potentially work their way onto NFL rosters.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum says the National Park Service doesn’t have the money to remove all those dead trees along the Natchez Trace Parkway.  Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith questioned Burgum during a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing Wednesday, saying…

“The Trace, much like the rest of Mississippi, continues to see the fallout from the 2023 drought and pine beetles that devastated the trees across our state.”

Burgum responded..

He said the answer would be to reauthorize the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund to provide money for the work that needs to be done along the Trace.

In addition to creating an eyesore, the dead trees often fall into the Parkway causing a safety hazard.

No severe storms are forecast in this area for the next few days but heavy rain could be a problem on Friday.  The National Weather Service says two to three inch rainfall will be widespread and coming on top of the previous rain this week, it could trigger some localized flash flooding mainly during the afternoon and evening on Friday.

The Kosciusko Attala Partnership-Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of a new Tourism Coordinator to help promote local attractions and events.

In a recent announcement, the Partnership welcomed Katie Bost to the role. A native of Kosciusko, Bost recently returned to the area and brings a strong connection to the community along with a passion for highlighting what makes Attala County unique.

According to the Partnership, Bost will focus on growing tourism efforts throughout the county. Her responsibilities will include supporting operations at the local Visitors Center, collaborating with community events and businesses, and promoting attractions and opportunities that encourage visitors to spend time in the area.

Officials with the Partnership said the position will play an important role in expanding tourism initiatives and increasing awareness of local destinations. They also expressed confidence that Bost’s enthusiasm and familiarity with the community will help strengthen ongoing efforts to attract visitors and boost economic opportunities.

The organization also noted that, in the coming weeks, it plans to introduce or reintroduce its board members and staff to the public as part of an effort to highlight the individuals working to support community growth.
