The Attala County Library is preparing to create a time capsule as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration.

During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen, Mayor Tim Kyle announced the city approved a proclamation supporting the library’s “Voices of Mid-Mississippi” project, which will include collecting meaningful items and stories from the community.

The time capsule will be officially sealed in July and preserved until the year 2076, marking the 300th anniversary of the United States.

Unlike traditional time capsules, the Kosciusko capsule will not be buried. Instead, it will be securely stored inside the library’s genealogy room until its scheduled opening.

Mayor Kyle said the project will allow residents to contribute items that reflect life in Kosciusko today, helping preserve local history for future generations.

The time capsule effort is part of the larger America 250 initiative, which includes statewide and national efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Additional community events connected to the America 250 celebration are expected to take place throughout the year.

The National Weather Service says, while straight-line wind damage and large hail will continue to be the primary threats, it’s not ruling out the risk of a brief tornado from severe storms which are possible in the local area and other parts of Mississippi this afternoon and tonight.   Most of the state is under a Level-2 “slight” risk of severe weather.  Wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour are possible.

Parts of this area will face another round of possibly severe weather on Sunday with a Level-1 “marginal” risk of damaging winds.   NWS has now trimmed back the threat of severe weather in Mississippi on Monday, showing only a Level-1 risk across some of the northern counties.

The Kosciusko Whippets baseball team hosted the New Albany Bulldogs Thursday evening in the first game of the second round of baseball playoffs.

After six innings, the Whippets got the win with a score of 12-2.

Jackson Schuler was named the Autumn Ridge Player of the Game.  Now, that’s something to smile about!

We’re approaching what historically has been the most dangerous time in the most dangerous month of spring storm season.  But April has been mostly quiet in Mississippi this year.  That’s about to change.   Eric Carpenter at the National Weather Service in Jackson says the risk for severe storms in the local area Friday night has been upgraded to a Level-2 “slight” risk.  But he says, that could be just the beginning…

“Going beyond Friday, we’re looking at additional rounds of showers and storms, at least on a periodic basis, to be likely as we go through the weekend into early next week.”

But the good news is that forecasters are not expecting Friday’s storms to produce the kind of big severe weather outbreak that we’ve often seen in late April.  The tornado threat should be relatively low Friday.  Instead…

“Right now, it looks like the main concern with that is more of a straight-line wind and hail threat.”

However, a more significant round of severe storms on Monday could produce some tornadoes.

Kosciusko High School’s Hayes Tyler captured a state title Wednesday, winning the MHSAA Class 4A Boys Singles State Championship in Vicksburg.

Tyler defeated Tyson Alford of Houston High School in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to secure the championship.

The title match was part of the individual finals of the MHSAA Individual Tennis Championships, which were held Wednesday as the culmination of the state tournament schedule.  

Tyler came out strong in the opening set, dominating play and winning 6-0 before facing a tougher challenge in the second set. After a competitive back-and-forth stretch, Tyler closed out the match with a 6-4 win to seal the state title.

The championship marks a major milestone for the Kosciusko tennis program and caps off an outstanding season for Tyler, who has been a consistent force in singles competition throughout the year, remaining unbeaten through regional and playoff competition leading into the state tournament.

With the victory, Tyler earns the distinction of Class 4A Boys Singles State Champion, bringing home a state championship to Kosciusko.

A community-wide Mental Health and Wellness Festival will return to downtown Kosciusko this summer.

City leaders approved the use of public space for the event during Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

According to Mayor Tim Kyle, the festival is scheduled to take place July 5 in the parking area behind Renasant Bank.

This will mark the second year for the event, which focuses on promoting mental health awareness and connecting residents with available wellness resources.
