Hemp. Cannabis. Marijuana. CBD. THC. Cannabinoids. Medical use. Recreational use. Legal. Illegal. The world of cannabis is an extremely complex place, but there's no one better to break it all down than our own local grower, producer, seller and advocate, David Falkowski. In this episode we cover all of the above, and David breaks down what each term means, how it applies to our lives. With legal "adult use" (formerly known as "recreational") coming soon to New York State. There are still more questions than answers. Fear not though, David clarifies it all in this episode. Stick around to the end to find out if your town "opted out" and will not allow legal dispensaries and on premise use lounges.
Judith Jordan is a licensed social worker specializing in the treatment of addiction and recovery for individuals and families. Ok, so this one is a real estate podcast. Ed Bruehl is one of the smart ones-- the kind of real estate broker who quietly does a ton of business. Ed has a slightly different take on most aspects of the Hamptons Real Estate game. That's why he's been so successful. And it's also why he makes such a great guest for the podcast. Join us as we look at the market from what Ed refers to " a fresh perspective", and find out what's really happening in Hamptons Real Estate.
Who's played Stephen Talkhouse more than Bosco? And who plays in more bands on the East End than Bosco? And what makes Nancy Atlas such a great bandleader? Join Bosco and me as he riffs on these topics and lots of others relating to the music scene on the East End, today, and in the good old days. Toss in a little surf reminiscence, some Costa Rican pura vida and we've got Episode 13 in the books!
Well, I wasn't quite expecting this. Erik Schwab, aka @saltyvisionz, teaches surfing at Ditch and Earth Science at Springs School. So I figured we'd talk about the science of waves and beaches and other fluffy subjects. Well, we did. A little. But we spent a lot more time on the social sciences, mainly current events and how we digest our information, how we form our opinions and how we express them to the world. And, well, we ended up down some fairly deep rabbit holes that neither of us had anticipated: climate change, obviously, but politics? and racism? and the internet? Yeah, we go there. I value the honesty that Erik brings to every conversation, but I was amazed at how much honesty and exploration he brought out in me. For a second I wondered who was interviewing who(m- I was an English major as you'll hear).
What was the first movie that made you cry? Do you remember? This is a great podcast question to ask Anne Chaisson, Executive Director of the Hamptons International Film Festival. Too bad she asked me first! But that's just how it goes when an amateur podcaster sits down with a long time dear friend and just starts talking about movies (it's ok to call them movies, or films, or even what Anne calls them). We cover a lot of ground here, sharing memories and what makes "the movies" so special to so many of us. Another great thing about doing a podcast with such a professional "show business" personality? We did it all in one take!!
It's not every day I get a mythological being on the podcast, but in this episode, I get to sit down with a real live Selkie (part seal, part human, all treasure) and I can assure you that they do exist. Evelyn O'Doherty is widely known as the kid you just can't get out of the water: whether she's surfing, paddle surfing, or just paddling around, very few days go by where she doesn't get in (look for her on a foil near you in the coming days!). She's also the editor, contributor, owner and "chief bottle washer" at the beautiful "Standup Journal" publication both online and in gorgeous print. I know Evelyn as the literal kid you can't get out of the water as we've actually known each other for most of our lives, having both grown up in Amagansett summers. In the episode, she shares her stories of leaving the classroom behind but remaining a teacher, making the transition from surfing to paddle surfing and back, her first paddle race (it was spontaneous and she lost) and lots of other fascinating experiences.
I have no idea how to describe this episode. I started this podcast to have fun, and every one of my guests has been great fun to be with and terrifically entertaining to talk to. So, no disrespect to my past of future guests, but I believe we entered a different dimension of fun with this episode. Caveman news? Check. Russian Shamanism? Did it. New York City restaurant life as a child? Covered. Costa Rican ex-patriotism? Yup. The problem with my left shoulder? Ok, that too. Gratitude? Check. Growing up at 57 years old? Mmm Hmm. Letting go of anger. You bet. We almost got through the whole thing without bringing up The Wizard of Oz, but being LeRoy, we at least touched on that touchy subject. And we did all of this with a healthy dose of rigorous honesty and a large heap of rich laughter. I'm not sure we did this in any particular sensible order, but that's kind of the beauty of the podcast. All I can say is that I hope the listener enjoys this episode one tenth as much as we did!
First of all, donuts. Because donuts, that's why. Here's the story about the donuts: how they started, how they're made, where you can get them now and why they go with everything. But don't think Christina DeSanti stops there. In this episode we go full bore into everything worth discussing in East Hampton: housing, mental health, education, transportation, politics (yes, politics!) and plenty of other worthwhile topics. Settle down, grab a few donuts and enjoy this one. I know I sure did!
You probably know Colin Ambrose as the owner, chef, gardener and wearer of many other hats at Estia's Little Kitchen in Sag Harbor. But did you know he's also a seriously devoted fly fisherman? Ok, you knew that. But did you know he produces short films about his escapades in fly fishing? And that his YouTube channel has over 50,000 views? Check out this week's Brew's Cafe and see if there are any other things you might not know about Colin. I can tell you he's a delightful conversationalist. But, you probably already knew that.
