Brice Davis was undergoing cancer treatment while fighting a custody battle for his young daughter—and being there to raise her gave him a reason to keep going. In this personal interview, he shares what it meant to face multiple myeloma, fatherhood and an uncertain future at the same time.
Brice joins Dave Alexander on Miami Valley View to discuss the years of exhaustion and shortness of breath that eventually led to blood testing, blood transfusions and a multiple myeloma diagnosis. He describes undergoing chemotherapy, managing frequent treatments and medications, receiving a stem-cell transplant and later achieving a form of remission.
At the same time, Brice was fighting for custody of his daughter. He explains why he was advised not to openly discuss his treatment during the case and how he tried to prevent his illness from being used against him.
The conversation also explores the anxiety and depression Brice experienced before his cancer diagnosis, the emotional effect of learning he had blood cancer and the pressure men often feel to remain silent about mental health.
These experiences became the foundation for his memoir, Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival, Fatherhood, and Becoming. Listen to hear how Brice turned cancer, custody, anxiety and fatherhood into a story about continuing the fight even when life remains uncertain.
