Youth sports were supposed to help kids fall in love with the game, develop their skills, and learn how to do hard things. So when did we start selling them a spot on the next team instead of teaching them how to earn one?
The most dangerous distractions rarely sound dangerous. In this episode of Brick by Brick, Odysseus and the sirens show leaders why they must decide what they stand for before pressure starts singing a different tune.
If your coaches are sending different messages, enforcing different standards, and speaking different languages, your athletes aren’t the problem. Alignment is not something leaders can hope for, assume, or delegate. Alignment is a leadership responsibility.
Anybody can perform when the conditions are perfect, but champions learn to flourish when they’re not. You don’t control the conditions, but you always control your response: grow anyway, compete anyway, lead anyway.
That voice in your head telling you “I’m not confident,” “I always choke,” or “I can’t handle this” may not be telling you the truth, it may simply be repeating what you’ve trained it to believe, whether you’re training it by accident or by design.
The 2004 U.S. Olympic basketball team had some of the greatest players on the planet, and talent still wasn’t enough. Great teams aren’t held together by talent; they’re held together by a WHY powerful enough to turn ME into WE.
People will give you their time because they have to, but they’ll only give you their heart when they believe in what you’re building. If you want commitment that survives adversity, sacrifice, and hard days, remember this: in order to have devotion, you’ve got to have emotion.
People don’t buy what you’re selling, they buy how you make them feel. And if you’re a coach or leader, your athletes aren’t buying your plays, your drills, or your championship vision until they first buy you.
Before your athletes believe your vision, your standards, or your strategy, they have to believe in you. The greatest coaches don't create buy-in, they create belief, and that belief becomes the foundation on which championship cultures are built.
