In our latest episode of "Bridging Generations," we're diving into the critical conversations from the Future Generations Conference held in Brussels.
The conference was organized by JESC, in collaboration with the Louvain Catholic University, and the University of Barcelona, and held on the 3rd of October 2024. The conference provided a platform to explore political ideas about future generations rights, with an interdisciplinary lens, inviting the best scholars, civil society, and EU officials on stage.
The Podcast was inspired by the excelent interventions and articles from Malcolm Fairbrother (Institute for Futures Studies and Department of Sociology, Uppsala University); Charlotte Unruh, (Institute for the Future of Work, University of Southampton); Maija Setälä, (Department of Philosophy, Contemporary History and Political Science, University of Turku, Finland); Iñigo González-Ricoy (Department of Philosophy, University of Barcelona).
The UN Summit for the Future, held in September 2024, saw global leaders agree to the "Pact for the Future", which prioritises the well-being of future generations. This pact is designed to ensure today's decisions do not negatively impact future citizens and calls for long-term thinking and preventative measures to safeguard the planet. The European Union has taken this call to heart, by appointing a Commissioner for intergenerational fairness and by incorporating future generations' impact assessments into its policymaking. Or at least this is what we want to believe!
