Back in the first century, men were divorcing their wives left and right, and the Pharisees asked Jesus if that was lawful. Our scripture reference today is Mark chapter nine, verses thirty through fifty, where Jesus speaks about true greatness in the kingdom, how to deal with sin, and what happens to those who cause a believer to stumble.

Today we derive encouragement from Mark chapter nine, where Jesus not only dealt with the needs of His disciples, but performed several miracles as well. He took Peter, James and John with Him up to a high mountain and was transfigured before them. He also later encountered a desperate father.

Many of us have wondered what it will be like to see God as He is. As Christians, we're told that seeing Him face to face will be a reality one day in heaven. But wouldn't it be nice to get a glimpse of that glory here on earth? Peter, James, and John had that opportunity on a mountain one day and we'll take a look at their experience here on this edition of Bridging the Gap.

Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" That's a question He still asks of us, as we'll soon discover. The world will give you all sorts of definitions of Jesus Christ - enlightened prophet, peace loving hippie, but they won't tell you who He really is - our Messiah - God in human flesh.

Those of you who are familiar with Mark's gospel may recall the story of the feeding of the five thousand that we studied in chapter six. Well, today we encounter a similar miracle. Jesus is about to teach His disciples a valuable lesson on love and compassion.

This account of the life of Jesus Christ is the shortest of the four gospels, but certainly contains many relevant lessons for us. Today we'll look at the Lord's healing of a deaf and dumb man, found in Mark chapter seven, beginning in verse thirty one.
