Isaac interviews Laverne Mickens, a 30 year teaching veteran and scholarship coach from Springfield, Massachusetts, known as Scholarship College Mama on all social media platforms. Laverne talks about the multitude of issues students are facing, exacerbated by Covid-19, including poverty, hunger, homelessness, and mental health challenges. She highlights the need for understanding and care towards these children and the burden placed on teachers to be both educators and social workers. Laverne and Isaac discussed the challenges faced by Black teachers and students in the education system, highlighting the impact of systemic racism. They also discussed the transition to online learning brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the increased use of online tools and platforms in education, and the challenges of teaching quality and managing student behavior.
