Speaker: Elisabeth Fowlie Mock, MD, MPH, FAAFP 

Elisabeth is a Family Physician living in Holden, ME, and practicing part-time as an Adult Hospitalist (or "Nocturnist") at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She does consulting work and teaches for the Maine Medical Association's Academic Detailing Program, MICIS. She attended Colby College and Emory University and received her MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. After a residency in rural Family Medicine, she received her MPH in Health Policy and Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a Past President of the Maine Academy of Family Physicians and an Alternate Delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Elisabeth very recently took her addiction medicine boards.

Carol Hubbard discusses the topics of managing medications and their side effects. She also offers help with life situations, such as  sleep, anxiety, and toileting to name a few.

Objectives: 1. Develop more expertise in ADHD medication management and managing side effects. 2. Highlight co-morbid conditions that may affect ADHD diagnosis, treatment and management including anxiety, autism, learning disabilities, and developmental delay, sleep, toileting, and GI issues. 3. Highlight key quality improvement strategies and how they can be used to standardize ADHD work in the practice. 4. Review current QI data to help guide the quality improvement process.

Hugh covers the following topics: 1. Explain the need for quality in addressing oral health for Maine's children 2. Understand quality and levels of quality 3. Implement strategies for practice improvement in oral health integration i.e. Qualis Health ideas 4. Motivate and engage other team players for oral health integration in the medical setting

Adrienne Carmack talks on the topic of "Fostering Care in ME: Improving the Health Care of Children in Foster Care in Maine, " Thursday, June 8, 2017, from  12-1 pm via zoom online webinar.

1. Updates on the state of foster care in the US and in Maine
2. Become familiar with the medical and mental health needs of children in foster care and how medical providers can help improve the health of children in foster care.
3. Become familiar with the systems and processes for caring for children in foster in Maine, through the Maine AAP and other stakeholders

A quiet revolution has been occurring in patient engagement. The development of digital services in healthcare, such as patient portals and mobile computing, along with demand for information transparency, has promoted practices and health systems to adopt online sharing of health data.  OpenNotes, the sharing of clinical notes, continues to grow and now has reached over 10 million. Evidence shows ready access to notes empowers patients, helps with self-care and following care plans.  This session explores opportunities and barriers to sharing notes, driving the conversation to get Maine on the OpenNotes map. 

POLST, which stands for Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment, is a type of advance directive that patients who may have less than a year to live can use to inform providers about their treatment wishes.

Dr. Rob Hunold had read numerous studies on the impact of POLST, and discovered that it had a major positive impact on patient outcomes and cost. So, he set out on a campaign to increase the number of patients in his practice who had completed POLST forms. He pulled it off, but only with perseverance and personal sacrifice.

When the front office staff at Dexter Family Practice in Dexter, Maine invited patients to drop marbles in a jar every time they lost weight, no one knew what a huge impact it would have. A little over a year later, 100 patients have shed more than 1,600 pounds.
