The return of Bringing Up Black Joy!
This last year has given us the time to really reflect on what we want for Bringing Up Black Joy.
The focus this week is on storytelling, and celebrating the authors that are promoting a positive narrative that centres on diverse characters. Recent statistics indicate that there's been a 23% decrease in Black Characters in Children's Bestsellers since 2020.
Join Chanju and Chibesa as they explore this important topic.
Welcome to season 2 of the newly branded Bringing Up Black Joy!
This episode is a celebration of Black youth around the world. In the past few years, we’ve been seeing Black children and young people mobilising to make a change and create legacies in our world. From Vanessa Nakate, the Ugandan climate activist making waves across the globe, through to the historic moment when poet and activist Amanda Gorman recited her poem at president Joe Biden’s inauguration.
We decided to speak to children and parents to get their views on how we can empower the next generation to make a positive impact in our world. This episode features kids across different continents including Africa, North America and Europe to hear what superpowers they would use to change the world
We also had a conversation with their parents and the focus was on how do we equip these inspirational kids to make the changes that they want to see?

This week Chanju and Chibesa are joined by Womba Lagrue to explore identity and motherhood through our relationship with hair. How can we empower ourselves and our children to embrace their hair?
Black hair can get personal. It can get political. And for a lot of people, it can be one of the most important aspects of their identity. No stone goes unturned as we explore the evolution of our hair journeys, stereotypes and difficult conversations with children and parents when it comes to the minefield of Black hair.

This week Chanju and Chibesa speak to Leah on dissecting the strong black woman trope. What do we need to unlearn?
The trope of the steely, resolute black woman is ingrained in society.
“Strong Black Woman” is a mantra for so much of our community that it is seldom realised how great a toll it has taken on the emotional well-being of black woman. As much as it may give her the illusion of control, it keeps her from identifying what she needs and reaching out for help.
So what do we need to unlearn? This podcast opens up the discussion. Let us know your thoughts @[email protected].
