Habakkuk, though such a small and seemingly hidden Book, is one of the most appropriate Books to speak to our American culture today. What Habakkuk’s people are going through, and what they have done, has been paralleled by our society. But what should make us sigh in exasperation can still allow us to sing in exaltation.

When Jesus said to Jerusalem that He wanted to draw them close to Himself like a mother-hen wants to gather her chicks close to her, He expressed the heart of every godly mother: to pray protection and guidance on her children. Praise God for the godly mothers who pray with and for their children.

Many of us have enjoyed the privilege and the blessings of having a godly, praying mother. God placed within females the notion toward rearing and nurturing children. That doesn't mean that moms are only interested in the physical necessities and comforts of life; a godly mother knows that the spiritual part of life is equally important. On this Mother's Day, consider a mother's prayer.

Transgenderism is a real and vocal part of today’s culture. Jesus reminds us in His High-Priestly Prayer that though we are in the world, we are not of this world. So how do we represent Jesus in a post-modern, anti-Christian world that embraces a vast departure from a foundational truth?

When we study Genesis, we can’t help but study Creation. When we study Creation, we can’t help but study God making man in His own image. When we study God making man in His own image, we can’t help but see how far we have departed from this Holy God. And that departure is magnified in our setting today.

Every generation since the Apostle Paul has believed that the Rapture of the Church and the Second Coming of Christ would occur in their lifetimes. And we do too. In fact, we find it difficult to believe that He would or could linger much longer. Yet, in mercy and in grace, He tarries. But the day is coming when He will wait no longer.

We Christians tend to think of the Rapture of the Church and the Second Coming of Christ in ideal, happy terms. And for us, it will be a happy time indeed. But for unbelievers, it will be a day of solemn and severe judgment. And that is the thrust of the warning found at the close of Luke 17.

In the movie Tombstone, Doc Holliday shows up beside the Earp brothers at a gunfight despite his violent coughing. Without the vulgarities, Jack Johnson says, “Doc, you ought to be in bed. What you doin’ this for, anyway?” Doc simply replies, “Wyatt Earp is my friend,” to which Johnson says, “I got lots of friends.” Doc Holliday’s line is so good. He says, “I don’t.” Wouldn’t you like to have a friend like that? Someone who is there when you need them, no matter what? Then you ought to be a friend like that. After all, A Friend in Need Needs a Friend Indeed.

Michael W Smith sang that friends are friends forever if the Lord’s the Lord of them. That means in good times and in bad. That means when even when my friend makes bad choices. That means even when my friend has stopped walking in fellowship with God. I need to be the faithful friend who helps my fallen friend the way Jesus helps me.

What do you typically find in your mailbox? Political flyers? Advertisements for things you just don’t want? Coupon booklets? Bills, which are the worst? Do you ever get to pull out a handwritten thank-you note? That’ll change your whole day. And you can do that for somebody. In fact, Christians ought to be so filled with gratitude that we become walking, talking, Living Thank-You Notes.
