Few messages are as polarizing as those on the subject of divorce. Divorce is an epidemic that occurs in nearly half the families in America. Although divorce rates have declined over the last decade, America still has one of the highest divorce rates of any country in the world. And the church is not immune. We seem to suffer as much as unbelievers. Is there any hope for marriage in America? Yes!

Back in 1974, country musician Freddy Fender released a song called Wasted Days and Wasted Nights. Sounds like that could be the subtitle to the Book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon seems to be expressing the regret he feels for the foolishness of wasting time being carnal. Now he just wants to find the one thing that gives meaning to life. And he finds it in obedience to God.

 If you’ve ever been asked to volunteer for a project or if you’ve ever been hired for a new position, the first question you probably had was, “What am I supposed to do?” Many people have this same question about life: What am I supposed to do? Those without a relationship with God will often seek the answer to that question from a variety of sources. Like the old song says, they go “looking for love in all the wrong places,” and nothing will satisfy their souls. If that’s you, don’t beat yourself up; even the wisest man in all the world struggled with the same issue. Turn to God, and you’ll discover your call to duty.

 I’ve heard someone say that we need to make the Bible relevant to today’s culture and times. The truth is that the Bible is already relevant. It speaks clearly and comprehensively to every subject in every generation. It is as fresh today as the day it was first penned. Your Bible is the greatest treasure you could have. And unlike the dollar, it will never ever fail.

Almost half of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product – our GDP – is impacted by the sale of products and services based on weight or another measurement. So it is vital that we have a standard. No matter who you buy from, a pound ought to be a pound, an inch ought to be an inch, a gallon ought to be a gallon. When it comes to righteousness, there needs to be a standard for whoever you are, wherever you are, and whenever you are. That standard is the Bible.

It’s not a surprise to read in our passage that the people of this world are more shrewd than the people of the Kingdom. What is strange is to hear Jesus say to His disciples that they ought to be more like that. As we investigate this passage we see how Jesus wants us to invest our lives and resources into those things that yield eternal benefits.

The most beloved of all of Jesus’ parables, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, is followed by one of the strangest of Jesus’ parables, often called the Parable of the Unjust Steward. Jesus actually commends the servant for his shrewdness. That’s not a quality we would expect Jesus to applaud, but He does. And there are lessons for us as His disciples to learn and practice.

This section of Deuteronomy is so important. Little Jewish children learned the repeatable refrain called the Shema in this passage: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one! And where were they to learn this important truth? At home, from mom and dad. Being trained at home to be a follower of Christ is of utmost importance. And we can apply these ways of Jewish Home Training to Christian homes today.

Dorothy clicks her ruby red slippers together and says, “There’s no place like home.” And she repeats it again and again. She’s correct: there really is no place quite like home. It’s where you are the safest; it’s where you are freest; it’s where you are loved; it’s where you belong. And it is the first place you should learn about God, about Who He is and about What He has done. It all begins at home.

You may hear someone say that science or history invalidates the Bible. There is not one reason to believe that. And The Vision of the Seventy Weeks is a great example. With precise timing, God details what He is going to do. So if you hear someone ask, “What is this world coming to?” you can point them to Daniel’s prophecy.
