"One of the most consistent discoveries in the four Gospels is people’s ignorance about who Jesus was. This is still true today. On Sunday we will arrive at one of the most critical points in all of the Gospels. This week, we have come to a place of decision-making concerning our own beliefs about Jesus. "Evaluations are a necessary part of any meaningful work. While it’s not always received well, because frankly, there’s always something that can be improved on. If done well, it creates a huge opportunity for improvement and growth.

Like many of you, I have an annual doctor's appointment where my doctor evaluates my health. He pokes and prods. He asks tons of questions. He has my blood drawn and he makes suggestions or recommendations about ways that I can improve my overall well-being. I used to be one of those people who avoided going to the doctor. Why? Because if I go he’s going to find something wrong with me and I didn’t want that bad news. I have since learned to appreciate those appointments.

Those annual visits have helped to identify issues in my health, both seen and unseen. And they have also helped me to live a healthier life as I have followed my doctor’s instructions.

The story of the feeding of the 5k is not that different. The disciples are going to have their faith evaluated by Jesus and what they will discover will be of great benefit to them as they continue to declare the kingdom of God wherever Jesus sends them.

So, grab your Bibles and let’s pick up at verse ten."

We are jumping back into our study of the Gospel of Luke and we have arrived at a transition point in the life of Jesus and His disciples. Since the fourth chapter of Luke the disciples have sat in the classroom with Jesus teaching them about the kingdom of God; showing them how to minister to others and explaining why it is important that the grace and love of God be extended to all people. Now, Jesus is going to push the disciples out of the classroom and into the hospitals of their surrounding region where they can try their hand at practicing what they have been learning about ministry from the Master.

The stories of Jairus' daughter and the woman with the issue of blood continue Luke's theme of obedience to the word of God. Earlier he used the examples of family, nature and demons to show its importance. This week he focuses on disease and death. Again, the challenge in all of this is to be doers of the Word and not just hearers.
