This week’s program will focus on the Oklahoma Teacher Walkout, an ongoing action to force our state legislature to appropriately fund public education in our state.

All successful protest movements are fueled by music, and this one is no exception, so most of the program will focus on these songs, but we’ll also have some of the speeches, as well as marching band music, performed by a combined band of Oklahoma high school band directors and students.

By the way I forgot to mention that Aaron Baker, who is playing the second song coming up, is one of the many teachers walking the 110 miles or 177km from Tulsa to Oklahoma City, with their arrival coming on Tuesday of this coming week.

* Move to a weekly schedule

– Experimenting with airing weekly programs on WRMI, with the first half being a mix of music and talk, and the second half being a digital mode broadcast.

– Rationale: Two reasons: First, we are getting a huge response from the BSR radiogram broadcasts, but I have a lot to learn through trial and error. A weekly program gives me more chances to experiment and see what works.

Second, there’s a lot of content I want to share and a monthly program just isn’t enough to work with.

As for other stations — I will be airing occasional programs (probably monthly) on WBCQ and Channel 292, but not weekly. Someday maybe, but the finances are only there to do a weekly show on WRMI.

## The Oklahoma Teachers’ Walkout ##

The walkout (aka strike) is starting in the morning, listen next week for sounds and music from the walkout, including songs by Oklahoma public school teacher and folk musician Aaron Baker.

So first… about our February show… well as is obvious by now, we didn’t do one. Life circumstances with family and job stuff just didn’t cooperate. I feel bad about this but the only thing to do is to move forward and get back to creating programming on a consistent basis again.

Jewish and Mennonite, Episode #1

From the start of BSR, Broad Spectrum Radio, I’ve shared bits and pieces of my religious/spiritual journey and have sought to use my programs as a way to promote a more tolerant understandings of faith, because I frankly think it is essential to peace in this world, but I haven’t shared my whole story, and I really haven’t made it clear that my religious identity is bireligious in nature.

So, I think it’s time for me to be more open, to explain how I, like a growing number of people in this country and around the world, find it too confining to be defined and limited by a single faith tradition.

In what I hope will be an ongoing series of programs, I will be sharing about what it is like to be bireligious, including some of the ethical and practical issues at stakes. I also want to share some of my observations from comparing, contrasting and experiencing two traditions, hopefully always from an attitude of respect. And there will be a good bit of discussion about what this looks like in the context of a family.

First though, I want to share a short version of my religious background, as it gives some important context, explaining how I got to this place.

I grew up in a conservative evangelical Christian tradition, the Churches of Christ, but more specifically the acapella-only branch of the Churches of Christ. It was there that I first developed faith, but also it was I first started to question and push back against what others told me to believe, particularly as a teenager and young adult.

In my young adult years, I started to drift from the astere experience of the Churches of Christ and towards the charismatic tradition, yet I didn’t sever all of my ties with the churches of christ,  as I ended up graduating with a bachelor’s degree from a Church of Christ school and I served for about a year as a Church of Christ preacher. I really did not fit well in this tradition any more.

This tension grew after I started to wrestle with the issue of violence from the perspective of the teachings of Jesus, which led me to see a conflict between my religious upbringing, which largely taught that abortion was wrong, but that the death penalty and war was ordained by God. As i dealt more squarely with the nonviolent teachings of Jesus, I was drawn to a pacficist understanding of faith.

Welcome to the BSR International Magazine Show from BroadSpectrumRadio.com, for December 2017.

Your host for tonight is James Branum.

We broadcast this program on a monthly basis for international shortwave radio and online listeners out of our mission to promote the values of solidarity, socialism, science and spirituality.

Tonight’s program will mostly focus on two of those values: solidarity and spirituality, as we will be playing some of the music of this season — the winter holidays of Advent and Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, Eid al-Adha, Winter Solstice, kwanzaa and New Years. These holidays don’t always fit in the month of December, but they do celebrate many of the same themes — the idea of hope and light during dark times.

We are sharing this music because we think it is important to remember than human beings are more alike than we are different, and that whether one says Merry Christmas, Eid Mubarak or just Happy Holidays, the sentiment expressed is that of love and hope.

So let’s get started… for fun I decided to organize the musical selections roughly by where these various holidays fall in 2017, at least to some extent…

 

So the first set of songs will be songs that celebrate the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Adhah, the Feast of Sacrfice (this year falling early Sept 1-2) and the Hindu festival lights, Diwali, happening on Oct 18 or 19, depending on what part of the world you live in.

On today’s episode of the BSR Magazine Show — we will mostly be playing some music.

But first a bit of background about the theme of this music…

And I need to give my standard disclaimer that since this commentary deals with electoral politics, it represents my views alone and not the views of any one else, or any other organization, includin my employers.

One year ago… the United States was in the midst of the final days of the election of a new President and a little more than a week after that came the terrible reality — the USA’s unfair and undemocratic electoral process had chosen Donald Trump to be our next President.

I was one of the millions of Americans who were horrified by this turn of events. I was no fan of Hillary Clinton either, as I saw her a pro-corporate pro-war establishment candidate, but Trump? How could a fascist be elected President in 2017?

The good news in the midst of the darkness was that a movement started to take root, a movement of resistance to the Trump neo-fascist agenda. Many people took to the streets in protest, but they also went to airports and ICE detention centers to protest Trump’s anti-Muslim immigration laws. National Park Rangers and other federal workers, having to use the cloak of anonymity, took action to speak out. And many, many other acts of resistance took place and are still taking place.

The struggle is not over by a long shot. Trump is still the President, the emperor, but he does not have the loyalty of many, many people… including many artists and musicians.

So today’s program will feature music of resistance, some from the past, but most from the contemporary moment. There will be music of anger, of sadness, but also of hope and resistance.

I’m playing this music today because we are nearing the one year mark of this nightmare and the struggle is not over. We need to find new resouvoirs of strength and courage to continue to work for what is right.

The first song I’ll be playing is from the Puerto Rican American Taina Asili. The song is called “No Es mi Presidente” — He is not my President. And speaking of that… one of the best ways we can resist Trump is to learn and speak languages other than English, even if we start off doing it badly. So in that spirit…
