Revolutionary Technology in a Unique Fluid-Free Nodal Camera Head Design
With the MYT Velour camera head, we are introducing a new, real alternative to fluid based heads such as the O'Connor heavy-duty models. These are wonderful instruments, but can be very heavy while being inadaptable to underslung shooting mode. They likewise cost about the same as a small car.
Heavier Sachtler fluid heads, which honestly have never blown anybody’s mind, fit more in the utilitarian, “if I have nothing else to choose from” category, at a price that is not warranted.
The nodal heads from Ronford, in particular the F7 (a wonderful, timeless head), were a major source of inspiration for us. These instruments, still in wide use today with a relatively decent weight to capacity ratio and an interesting dampening combination system, are truly beautiful tools. The Lamdba also fits into this category, and is a truly incredible system, so heavy but so great with its ease of adjustment. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive.
We at MYT Works simply feel that that the market is constricted, and that it does not have to be that way. Fluid heads have many advantages and an established feel one can easily relate to. But it was never a natural feel. Fluid heads, including O'Connor ones with their dual-spring systems, have tried to get closer to a more natural motion by introducing a spring loaded resistance in a bath of oil. It works great, but it simply is not an organic feel. It is not how the human muscle functions and reacts.
Our heads on the other hand mimic the motion of human muscle form through applied force, compression and resistance. Our heads contain no fluids, only mechanical components working in tandem to allows one’s mind to extend through his or her arm to the head’s handle and out onto the world. Each of our nodal heads is designed as a continuation of the operator’s arm, allowing him or her to control the camera in the most natural way possible. It’s that simple.
Regular fluid heads were not satisfactory for the range of camera motion we wanted to offer. As a result, our nodal design retains all the attributes of a classic Ronford or Cartoni nodal head without the weight, without the cost, and without the unnaturalness of a notched damper.
A very important attribute of the MYT Velour, one conveniently neglected by all fluid head manufacturers except for the O'Connor fluid heads, is the ability to use different mounts. The Velour can accommodate a Mitchell base, a 150mm half bowl, and a 100mm, allowing for a far broader base of use and tripod legs. All mounts are easily interchangeable in a couple of minutes via simple Allen screws.
Some Details on the Velvet Camera Head
Our MYT Velvet nodal camera head can handle a load of up to 40lbs, making it suitable for any camera from a DSLR to a broadcast camcorder and any camera body in between, including RED Epic, Black Magic, Sony F3 and F5, and Canon C100, C300, and C500. All 16mm film cameras can also be used on the Velvet. This head weighs less than 15lbs and is meant to be our most versatile head in terms of ease-of-use, load capacity, and portability.
The Velvet nodal camera head is a precision instrument that is nonetheless built to withstand the rigors of film-work in a wide variety of locations. This is made possible by our unique fluid-free design, which eliminates the variations in oil viscosity caused by ambient temperature changes in traditional fluid heads. With a traditional fluid head, the oil gets heavy and slow in cold temperatures, affecting the quality of motion on the head and the effort that needs to be exerted by the operator in order to make a move. In hot temperatures, the opposite effect takes place. This oil also has the unfortunate tendency to leak, which can result in costly and time-consuming repairs that limit your productivity.
Like all the heads in our Head Line, the Velvet is based on a fully mechanical design that uses industrial-grade slewing bearings on the pan and tilt axes. These bearings were manufactured for the industrial market to withstand thousands of passes on industrial machines applying enormous amounts of pressure. They do not wear out easily.
Unlike regular fluid heads, the mechanical nature of our fluid-free design allows for a motion that feels organically human. You will not need to compensate for the lethargy of the oil, which is particularly important during the beginning and ending of your move. This makes for a very clean motion completely void of any “settling” present on a fluid head, so you can relax and let the head stop on its own without maintaining tight control throughout the operation. The head comes to rest naturally with no backlash.
