When we left Sarina at the end of the last episode she had just wrapped up her year as a Nike Field Reporter.  But she didn't just land at ESPN when her time with Nike was over.  In this episode she takes us from her time as an executive assistant for an investment banking company to TruTV, National Geographic, and finally ESPN.  While she was at Nat Geo, Sarina helped grow the social media presence from 300,000 followers to more than 3-million.

Sarina Morales of ESPN takes us from her time playing sports against the guys in the Bronx to the halls at Bristol.  After lying to her friends and family about having a job when she left for London, Sarina eventually got a job at the company she said she was working for.  After her visa expired across the pond, she came back to NYC for a short time before landing a job as a Nike Field Reporter.  She'd go on to work at TruTV and National Geographic, before ESPN.  But it wasn't always easy for Sarina.  In Part 1 we talk about the struggle to break into the broadcasting industry.  Part 2 will be out next week.

After Lizzy Okoro's first magazine venture failed, at age 11 she didn't give up.  She went on to run a Pog pyramid scheme and eventually founded of BUNCH magazine.  Lizzy went retro when she started her magazine.  While most magazines go digital, she started on the digital side with a blog then learned how to publish a magazine to give her content some credibility.  During our interview she shares some great advice on setting a time frame to pursue your dream, surviving burnout, and finding your community.  Thanks for listening!

Never leave with just one tape or piece of media.

Make sure you charge you batteries after every shift.

Never leave a camera with no media loaded.

Unless you have your gear strictly assigned to you,  always pre-check before going out in the field. 

Set (compose) your shot before hitting the record button. 

Communicate with your reporter.  Be on the same page to ensure they write to your video, especially if you're editing it. 

Edit in camera shooting, especially for breaking news.  

Try to be 2 steps ahead of the next move to be made. 

Don't light someone on a white wall if possible. 

When mic'ing your subject, make sure they're talking into the mic and not away from the mic.

Michael DelGiudice has an uncanny ability to bring viewers to the story.  It's no wonder that reporters who work with him usually use so few words.  When there is a track, DelGiudice usually has the perfect shot to match.  During our conversation with the lensman for WNBC he explains how his passion for the camera helped him find a career he never imagined.  A career that now includes more than 60 Emmy's, although he doesn't like to talk about it.  He explains how learning how to do other jobs around the newsroom can make you a better storyteller.

In part two of our conversation with Wayne Freedman we get deeper into the craft of journalism.  Wayne shares the struggle to cover news in the Bay Area as crews continue to get attacked for their equipment.  He talks about the Darwinian nature of a reporting career.  We discuss the frustration in predicting the future of the business and the affirmation bias creating a division in the country.  Just as Freedman's book should be required reading for all young journalists, this conversation is a must listen!

Wayne talks about needing security on a regular basis to cover stories in the Bay Area these days.  Sometimes reporters have to choose between getting the story and putting their safety at risk.  You can click on any of the pictures to read more about some of the recent attacks on journalists in the area.

Wayne received more than 50 Emmy Awards and the Governors' Citation.

Wayne Freedman is a master storyteller.  The reporter for KGO won more than 50 Emmy awards before he decide to take a step back and give others a chance to take home a trophy.  Wayne wrote his first column for the Los Angeles Daily News when he was 14 years old and he is still helping narrate history.  He is also the author of "It Takes More Than Good Looks To Succeed In Television News Reporting".  Wayne was nice enough to share the two most important words every journalist should ask.  Anyone involved in telling stories can take something away from this conversation.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
