The series of the tabernacle continues this morning as we seek to understand the significance of the altar in the courtyard. Last week we discussed the “alter of incense” and looked at the relationship between it and the “brazen altar”which we will consider this morning.

As we begin this new year, we continue our series “the Gospel in Exodus.” As we have learned, Israel's story is a foreshadowing of our own story. (God redeeming a people by the blood of the Passover lamb and desiring to dwell among them.)

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all have sinned”

This morning as we approach the celebration of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior, let us focus upon the question raised in the old familiar Christmas Carol, “What Child is This?”

“What child is this who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap, is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is the Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing, haste, haste, to bring him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary!”

What child is this? The confusion reigns in our own day! To put it mildly, Christmas is a little bit confusing to the watching world. The apostle Paul's words in our text may help to clear away the clutter and focus us on the greatest reality, “the Christ has come”.

As we continue our study of the tabernacle and its furnishings, we examine the 2nd of 3 pieces of furniture that was within the holy place.: the golden lamp stand. The tabernacle was a tent that was four layers thick. Imagine how dark it must have been! There were no windows and light could not penetrate the four layers of coverings. It would have been a place of black darkness if God had not provided the “light”.

As God instructed Moses concerning the building of the “tabernacle”, He now gave instruction concerning the “table of bread” which was contained in the Holy Place. As we will discover, God had a great purpose in placing the table and the bread in the tabernacle.

Have you ever designed a house? Have you ever considered what your “ideal” house might look like? The very One who created the universe in six days spent 40 days on the mountain with Moses giving detailed instructions concerning His “tent”. (God could have spoken the word, and the tent would have been created). The people of Israel had the incredible privilege of having Yahweh dwell among them, as well as, the honor of building His dwelling place.

Today, the congregations of Hope Community Church, St. John Methodist and San Juan Hispanic Church will be joining Broadway Baptist for a joint worship service. Pastor Daniel Castillo from San Juan will be preaching in Spanish with the message translated into English.

Not only did Moses receive the Commandments written in stone, he received the instruction and the pattern for the “Tabernacle in the wilderness”. God established a sacrificial system , a Levitical Priesthood and a tent of “grace” to His people when they broke his laws and sinned against Him and against one another.
