According to the text from the Gospel of John, "the Word" was in the beginning with God and was God. All things were made through him, and he was the source of life and light for humanity. His purpose in baptizing with water was so that the one who came after him, and whom he saw the Spirit descend upon and remain, might be revealed to Israel. John's witness is crucial in identifying Jesus as "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" and "the Son of God."

The first disciples mentioned are called by Jesus directly. Andrew and another disciple of John the Baptist follow Jesus after John points him out as "the Lamb of God." Jesus invites them to "Come and you will see," and they stay with him. Andrew then finds his brother Simon (Peter) and tells him they have found "the Messiah." Jesus also finds Philip and tells him to "Follow me." Philip then finds Nathanael and tells him they have found the one written about by Moses and the prophets, Jesus of Nazareth.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers, "You are the salt of the earth." Salt in this context likely symbolizes several things: preservation (preventing decay), flavor (making things more palatable), and perhaps purity or being distinct. The implication is that his followers have a vital role to play in the world, much like salt is essential.

Jesus warns that if "the salt loses its saltiness," it is no longer good for anything. It cannot be made salty again and is only fit to be "thrown out and trampled underfoot." This serves as a strong admonition that followers of Jesus must maintain their distinctive qualities and purpose; otherwise, they become useless.
