  • Did the Church Replace Israel as God's People? (Hint: No) | ABBA #1

Did the Christian Church replace the nation of Israel as the chosen people of God? In an ideal world, would all Jewish people become Christians? How does ancient Israel that we read about in the Bible relate to the modern nation-state of Israel all over contemporary newspaper headlines? Today we put all these questions to the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Law at Duke University Brent A. Strawn in this first entry Ask Brent Basically Anything Series of the Brown Bag Bible Podcast, I’m your host Caleb Punt, thank you for listening.

  • Genesis 22: The Binding of Isaac

About halfway through Genesis, the first book of the Bible, God commands a father to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering to the Lord. Genesis 22, the story of Abraham and the Binding of Isaac is one of the most disturbing, perplexing, and finely crafted stories in the entire Old Testament. It is also the first story we are tackling on the Brown Bag Bible Podcast in our series on “Wild Texts,” during which we read the most troubling, bizarre, and confusing passages of Bible that we can find and attempt to read them as Holy Scripture. In this episode Brent and Caleb wrestle with questions like Why would God ask Abraham to commit such a terrible deed? What was Abraham thinking as he climbed that fateful mountain? And finally, is it possible that we’ve been reading this story all wrong, is it possible that Abraham actually failed God’s test, and that God never wanted Abraham to Bind Isaac in the first place?
