First Drive Dominance

In 2021, the Panthers were the only team that didn't allow a touchdown on the opening drive of every game. Carolina allowed just nine points on opening drives with three field goals, one takeaways and 13 punts.

Elite Pass Rusher

Brian Burns was elected to his first Pro Bowl in 2021 after finishing the season with 9.0 sacks. He now has 18.0 sacks in the last two seasons, tied for sixth-most among NFC players. His 25.5 career sacks are the most of his 2019 draft class. Burns also has 55 career QB hits (third in draft class), 26 tackles for loss (tied for fourth) and six strip sacks (tied for first).

Under the Radar

Wide receiver DJ Moore has posted three consecutive seasons with at least 1,100 receiving yards, something only Stefon Diggs has done elsewhere in the league. Moore is the only player with at least 1,200 total scrimmage yards in each of the last three seasons. Moore now ranks fourth in Panthers history with 4,313 career receiving yards and is sixth with 301 receptions.

Why Cleveland Browns Will Win

The Brown running game has to hammer away from the start. The passing attack will be a massive question mark without the star parts at receiver – with some due respect to Amari Cooper – and Jacoby Brissett under center, but the backs are there to keep working and grinding against the okay Panther defensive front. Run the ball, rely on the pass rush to come through on third downs, and send everyone at 6 to see if he can handle the pressure. However....

Why Carolina Panthers Will Win

Not to assume the obvious, but who knows this Cleveland defense – at least the main parts – better than the guy who worked against it in practice every day? Baker Mayfield might not be Brady or Mahomes, but he’s an upgrade for the Carolina passing game. He’s got a healthy Christian McCaffrey to work with, his receiving corps is more loaded than it might seem, and it might not take too much to put the pressure on.

Go ahead. Make Brissett try to win this through the air.

Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper is about 15 minutes into an interview. He’s just off the practice field, spending extra time to work routes. It’s hot and there’s no shade. He spent the first five minutes of the interview catching his breath between answers.

He’s answering a question about his favorite route and you can tell he’s heard the question plenty of times before. Then he stops.

Jadeveon Clowney believes the Browns defense will be even better than a year ago, and it's hard to disagree with him. One reason why? Well, Clowney is still on the roster — the eighth-year defensive end veteran re-signed with the Browns in May, and his return gave the Browns a chance to run it back with eight of the 11 other starting defensive players from last season. The Browns ranked fifth in the league in total defense a year ago, and Clowney became a destructive force once the group clicked in the second half of the season. He registered 5.5 of his nine total sacks from the year in his last three games, and that number could be even higher if he didn't miss Weeks 14-15 due to being placed on the COVID-19 list.

At this point, whether Baker Mayfield said what it was reported he said probably doesn't matter. It's out there and the Browns aren't going to shy away from using.
