  • Ohio State vs. Western Kentucky Preview and Prediction
Ohio State seems to understand that Western Kentucky has an entirely different kind of offensive philosophy than the Indiana Hoosiers and Youngstown State Penguins. WKU is one of the most pass-happy teams in all of college football and the Buckeyes are going to be tested in a very different way on Saturday. But who are the Hilltoppers and what does their personnel look like? What can we come to expect from a team that is a 26-point underdog that goes and plays every week like they have nothing to lose?
Let's dive into on Thursday morning's edition of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast with Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin!

  • Ryan Day, Jim Knowles Acknowledge Necessary Changes for Buckeyes
Ohio State won it's first two games against a team that ran the triple option and an FCS opponent that wanted to throw the ball within two seconds of snapping it (after they milked the play clock as far as they could). Tuesday afternoon, Ryan Day and Jim Knowles both admitted that Saturday's game against Western Kentucky will present an entirely different kind of challenge.
With Kyle McCord now officially leading the offense, Ohio State is settling into it's offensive identity for the season. They looked much more comfortable attacking through the air against the Penguins, given a bit more experience from McCord. That said, Ohio State hasn't seen a team with the kind of offensive air-raid philosophy probably since Michael Penix Jr. and the Indiana Hoosiers came to a carboard-cutout filled Horseshoe in 2020. Jim Knowles wasn't in charge of the Silver Bullets at that point, but he certainly saw plenty of pass-heavy offenses in the Big 12.
Knowles made a couple of notable admissions to reporters on Tuesday around his coaching adjustments away from an ultra-aggressive defense in order to give his secondary a better chance to prevent big plays from leaking over the top. That was OSU's Achilles heel in 2021 and 2022 in losses to Oregon, Georgia and twice to Michigan.
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin discuss what the heard from both coaches on Tuesday and why it matters as the Buckeyes set the tone for the remainder of the season.
It's all straight ahead on Wednesday morning's edition of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast!

  • Ohio State: QB Decision, Linemen Personnel/Scheme Need Addressing
As he does every Tuesday, Ryan Day will meet with the media to reflect on last week's performance against Youngstown State and begin looking ahead to Western Kentucky. At this point in the season, nearly every question Day is asked revolves around the Buckeyes - he's rarely asked about the team that they're playing the coming Saturday.
Here are the questions we most want answered from Day on Tuesday (although we aren't sure how straightforward of an answer we are going to get):
    - What is the solution with the offensive line? It almost looks like they are stuck in camp mode mentally. He's made it clear he thinks the issues are correctable, but last week didn't really show a ton of improvement and their opponent was unquestionably inferior compared to Week 1. How will the coaches approach offensive line rotation?
    - On the defensive line, as much as Western Kentucky wants to throw the ball, this should be a week that unit could get on track. What is it going to take for a pass-rushing group that we've heard so much about to make a significant impact?
    - Is Day finally ready to plant a flag in the ground and say this is Kyle McCord's team? Or is he going to continue the QB competition this week and give Devin Brown reps during meaningful moments in the game? And how is he evaluating McCord's development?
    - What constitutes a successful outcome this week in Day's eyes? Obviously the goal is to win convincingly. But what does that need to look like so he feels like they are firing on all cylinders before the team travels to Notre Dame next week?
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin address all of that and more on Tuesday's edition of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast!

  • Why Didn't The Buckeyes Annihilate Youngstown State?
Yesterday's Ohio State win over FCS opponent Youngstown State was largely a decent performance. It was plenty good enough to win on Saturday against a team they were overmatched against, but did it entirely "look the part"? How could it have been if they only scored 35 points, including just 7 in the second half?
There's so much to get into from the Week 2 performance, including:
    - Why I think the Kyle McCord vs. Devin Brown battle is over
    - Why did the second half lack any real punch?
    - How serious is the problem on the offensive line?
    - Why have the defensive ends generated such little pressure through two games?
    - TreVeyon Henderson ran with bad intentions
    - Marvin Harrison Jr. is the ultimate game-breaker
    - How can Ohio State overcome having limited possessions?
    - Was the score of the game misleading?
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin break it all down for you after Ohio State had a second start decent win to start the season.

  • Instant Analysis of Ohio State’s 35-7 Victory Over Youngstown State
The Ohio State Buckeyes came back to the 'Shoe and took care of business against the visiting Youngstown State Penguins. The first half looked like what we are accustomed to seeing, with Ohio State's explosive offensive putting on a show with some long scores, and with stout defense locking down the Penguins after surrendering an opening score. Most importantly though, Kyle McCord looked really good and appears to have won the starting quarterback job.
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin give you some instant reactions to Saturday’s win, live from Columbus!

  • Why Ohio State Needs To - And Will - Beat Youngstown State Convincingly

The Ohio State Buckeyes have left lots of national college football fans wondering if they're going to actually be a team that factors into the College Football Playoff picture this season after the ONLY beat Indiana, 23-3. Ryan Day's offense looked clunky and much of the day screamed "Week 1." The good news? The defense looked outstanding, especially considering they needed to adjust to a scheme they hadn't practiced for all week.

With an FCS opponent coming to town, Ohio State has every opportunity to get things back on track and build up some confidence.

Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin explain why they think the Buckeyes will do exactly that, including a score prediction as they preview Saturday's first game back inside Ohio Stadium since the loss to Michigan last November.

  • What to Know About the Buckeyes As Home-Opener Approaches
Ohio State's Week 1 win over Indiana has been discussed ad nauseum over the last several days, but the team has been hard at work preparing for Youngstown State to come to Columbus for the first home game of the season. We heard from several players after practice on Wednesday night, all of whom indicated they were happy to be turning their attention to the next game and that they know they have things to work on, but they were glad to start the season with a win.
We'll share some more post-practice observations with you this morning, as well as give you a little overview of what you can expect with the Penguins coming to town for only the third time ever.

  • Are Ohio State's Offensive Line Issues Correctable?
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with the media on Tuesday afternoon to discuss his team's 23-3 win over the Indiana Hoosiers to open the season. In his 52 games coaching the Buckeyes, it was only the fourth time they were held under 30 points in a game. The other three times came against an elite Iowa defense last year, against Northwestern last year in miserable weather, and in the 2021 National Championship Game against Alabama when the Buckeyes were missing several key players because of CoVID-19.
There were clearly issues on the left side of the offensive line in Week 1. Day claims everything they saw on tape is fixable, he shared which linemen graded out as a champion on Saturday, said they aren't going to be a team that solely relies on throwing the ball and shared Kyle McCord's reaction to watching the film together.
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin break down their reaction to Day's comments, as well as whether or not we got any clarity on the QB situation moving forward on Wednesday morning's episode of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast!

  • Ohio State: Quarterback Questions Ryan Day Has to Answer
The Ohio State Buckeyes opened the year with a solid, albeit not a blowout win at Indiana last weekend. As they turn their attention to Saturday's game against Youngstown State, Ryan Day has a number of pressing questions that need answers soon. Has he essentially decided that Kyle McCord is QB1 this year (and not just last week), and if he hasn't decided that, what is the thought process behind such little playing time for Devin Brown against the Hoosiers? How did he evaluate the offensive line play on Saturday? Will we continue to see a lot of 2-tight end packages, or were the Buckeyes running a scheme against IU that they thought made Kyle McCord comfortable to open the year?
Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin dive into what they expect Ryan Day to discuss during Tuesday afternoon's press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on this morning's edition of Buckeye Breakdown!
