What if being great at sales has nothing to do with being a smooth talker?
Peter Larson has spent the last 30 years in sales at Cobb Technologies. But through his teens, 20s, and 30s, he lived with an unpredictable stutter that made him terrified to speak. Instead of letting embarrassment stop him, Peter learned how his brain works, leaned into being an introvert, and realized that listening beats pitching every single time.
In this episode, Peter shares what he learned from surviving 100% commission door-to-door book sales on cold canned beans, how he handles monthly sales pressure without needy energy, and why genuine relationships always drive real results.

Society teaches us that if we cannot control every outcome in our life, we are doing something wrong. We carry an exhausting amount of pressure, believing that enough willpower and force can guarantee certainty in an unpredictable world.
In this episode, I break down the Certainty and Control Myth and why ambitious people get trapped in exhausting cycles of self-criticism, anxiety, and micromanagement. Drawing from personal experiences in rehab, corporate sales leadership, and family dynamics, I unpack what is actually happening beneath the surface when we try to force outcomes.
What you will discover in this episode:
• The hidden trap behind the Serenity Prayer that most high achievers miss completely
• Why the need for control shows up as blame in your relationships and self-criticism in your head
• The dangerous imbalance between discipline and surrender when chasing goals
• What retail sales quotas and family dynamics taught me about the physical cost of forcing outcomes
• A simple shift to stop identifying with anxious thoughts and build strong self-trust

What you'll get from this one:
• Why conventional self-care hacks fail to fix a performance-based identity
• The hidden roots behind why you feel guilty the moment you stop working

Over half of workers say they've felt burned out in the past year. And most of the advice out there doesn't actually fix it. Sleep more, take a vacation, work fewer hours... none of that gets to the real problem.
In this episode I get into what's actually causing burnout, and I share my own story of experiencing it after years of chasing success and realizing it wasn't enough.

Burnout isn't just about overworking or lacking boundaries—it's deeply connected to our self-worth. When we believe we must earn our worth through achievements and people-pleasing, we create patterns that lead to exhaustion and unfulfillment.
• Understanding burnout as a symptom of limiting beliefs about our worth
• My personal story of rock bottom: losing my job, relationship, and home
• Realizing I was stuck in a cycle because I believed I had to "earn" my worth
• The difference between inherent worth and self-worth
• Why external success never truly fixes burnout
• How to reconnect with your inherent worth by getting clear on what you want
• Signs your self-worth is improving (reduced reactivity, inner peace, intuitive connection)
• Practical strategies: breathwork, journaling, intentional solitude, and exercise
• The crucial question: If you truly trusted your worth, what would you stop tolerating?

Discipline alone can lead to burnout while devotion transforms exhaustion into fulfillment and sustainable success. The journey from living in the back of a supplement store to building a purpose-driven coaching business reveals the critical difference between pushing through tasks and being pulled forward by passion.
• Discipline comes from the mind—structured, rigid, obligatory—and stems from "I have to" thinking
• Devotion comes from the heart—energizing, fulfilling—and stems from "I get to" thinking
• Burnout happens when energy-draining activities consistently outweigh energy-giving ones
• Create two columns (should vs. want to) to audit your daily tasks and identify imbalances
• Start with small changes to improve your energy ratio rather than attempting dramatic overhauls
• Give yourself permission to prioritize joy and fulfillment alongside achievement

Traditional hustle culture leaves millions of people burned out, sick, and completely disconnected from who they are. We’ve been trained to follow every rule and hit every goal, only to end up…
I’m Brennan Hilleary—business owner, speaker, and culture consultant—and I started the Build Your Power podcast to directly challenge this way of living.
Drawing from my own experiences, I share raw conversations and solo reflections on what it means to go against the grain of self destructive hustle and grind culture.
This goes beyond standard self-improvement. It is a practical guide to self-realization, helping us dismantle outdated narratives and reclaim our power so we can live a life that fits who we are.
