October 30, 2017Daniel Bigman of Learn GPR | Episode 012Episode 012 Shownotes Here is a list of topics covered in my interview with Daniel Bigman of Learn GPR. Daniel's LinkedIn Background PhD from the University of Georgia and is an expert in non-invasive subsurface mapping and 3D imaging Started with archaeological project using NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) to map ancient site. Transitioned to civil engineers and using GPR for concrete scanning, utility locating. Daniel is on the board for Engineering Environmental Geophysical Society & Associate Editor for Fast Times a leading magazine for subsurface geophysical. GPR = Ground Penetrating Radar LearnGPR Current project in Yucatan Peninsula investigating how ancient people interacted with environment. How GPR Works High frequency (1000-2600 Megahertz) yields better resolution Need to layer several techniques to find most to all buried infrastructure to create a ArcGIS or AutoCAD plaform. Start with electromagnetic locator (EM) because it's faster Then, use GPR to clean up data acquisition. GPR & EM can be used on same unit. Problem with GPR GPR is not as effective in salt water environments Antenna frequency and geophysical properties of material can affect GPR results. Need to use multiple GPR antenna's to access different depths and in different soil conditions. No instrument is 100% effective. Predictions How to integrate GPR and drones. Adoption of GPR on autonomous cars will be slower due to noise issues with additional electronic sources surronding GPR unit. However, technology is currently employed for landmine detection.
