? Today’s topic: Creating your programs image or message: BRANDING: WHAT MESSAGE IS YOUR PROGRAM SENDING? What’s your programs tradition?

Companies spend millions of dollars creating and cultivating their image and developing their brand.  What do you do to shape the image of your program and develop your brand?  Branding may not be on the agenda of your weekly staff meetings, but it certainly should be.

I’ll bet if you go to each of your coaches and ask them what your team’s brand is.  No one can clearly articulate it. Chances are, most of you have never thought about creating your brand.

Your first step is to define what your brand should be, identify what your brand currently is and how to bring those two together.  Ask questions of your current staff, student-athletes and alumni about what they would think of as the image of your program, what your brand looks like.  Make sure the focus is on the image of the team as a whole or the program as a historical entity.

The second step is to develop messaging about your brand.  From building language into your own team message, to how your viewed on social media, everything should reflect your brand and reinforce your image.

Episode #3 - Looking to be a Head Coach? These are the six things I believe are needed to build a successful Football program:

?1. Players who will commit to the process. THE CTP APPROACH:

C – Commit: Commitment is the difference between a dream and a goal. Successful football requires a strong commitment by a large group of people. (Team)

T – Trust:  Trust the Process, your Coaches and Teammates. Build a foundation of Brotherhood. On this TEAM-We stand-up for each other, we are loyal to each other, we protect each other through the good and the bad, we’re always about US, not about ME. WE BELIEVE IN EACH OTHER!

P – Prepare:  If you want to succeed you have to do the work. Each competitive instance presents a price to pay for success. If you haven’t earned enough to cover that price, you can’t buy the win. You can’t put winning on a credit card. It has to be paid, in full, in advance.  Some people dream of worthy accomplishments; others stay awake and do them.

 
?2. Parents who believe and support your culture.

You need a group of parents who buy in to your process, who support you in fundraising, team building activities, stress to their sons that grades, off season weight-training and conditioning along with attending in season practice are all important parts of the process and building a education based athletic program.

Episode #2: Top 10 Question you need answered before accepting that New Head Football Coach Position

Looking to become a Head Football Coach or move to another School? Make sure you get the answers to these top 10 questions before you make that decision.

1.       Why did the last Head Coach leave or get fired?

2.       Who will be my Supervisor or go to person be?

3.       Do I get to hire my own Staff?

4.       From the last staff who do you think is a good fit or bad fit?

5.       Is the administration and faculty supportive of the football program?

6.       What is the budget for football program and how much does the school contribute?

7.       What type of faculties do we have? (i.e.: weight room, locker rooms, game field, press box, practice field, coach’s office)

8.       Do the youth programs use our fields and who are the feeder programs and schools?

9.       Is there a parent’s group or booster club?

10.   Is the school enrollment declining or rising?

The answer to these questions should give you a good foundation of information to determine is this job for me? Many new head coaches jump at the first opportunity that comes their way, thinking they will be able to do what they know it takes to start-up or turn around a football program. The problem is they never find out about these top 10 questions until there on the job and by then it’s way too late.
