Building Resilience and Self-Esteem

Listen Later

Over the last few episodes, Lauren has discussed how other cultures teach cooperation, helpfulness, motivation, and emotional control. Today she discusses building self-esteem in our kids which leads to more resilient and less anxious children.

In the last few years we have moved away from a strict authoritarian approach to parenting.  The US has embraced giving kids a little more control while, at the same time, we became overprotective and controlling in a different manner.

This episode discusses six ways to help your kids become more resilient and gain self-esteem.

  1. Limit your requests or orders.
  2. More non-verbals.
  3. Don’t answer for your kids.
  4. Let kids be.
  5. Let them do hard or dangerous things.
  6. Disappear or get lost

Listen to the episode to hear the reason behind each change and examples.

Lauren answers this week’s listener question during the episode: Kids are really stressed out and tired and struggling to regulate their emotions. What do we do?
