A lover of poetry, spoken word, and many different genres of music, Jahmaal Marshall has always had a passion and hunger to see past the surface and broach varying topics to discover the “why” behind the “what.” Jahmaal is a certified counselor with I.A.B.C. (The International Association of Biblical Counselors) and a former program coordinator for a non-profit organization involved in global outreach. He’s originally from southern California but transitioned to D.C. in early childhood and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2009.
Oddly enough, Jahmaal didn’t get his start as a counselor, consultant, public speaker, or podcast host.
He got his start through an extremely traumatic childhood that left him broken and striving to put his best foot forward in every facet of life. Jahmaal grew up in a home with a father who, in his earlier years, was an alcoholic and drug addict. Because Jahmaal’s father was often under the influence, Jahmaal was extremely nervous and on edge, willing to do anything to ensure he didn’t set his father off. This fear made its way into Jahmaal’s subconscious mind and controlled how he interacted outside the home amongst peers, professionals, and associates.
Jahmaal always brought more to the table than was necessary for fear that he would be rejected. He was told he had an essence of excellence, but the output was just a trauma-response to the belief that he had to stay two to five steps ahead of everyone around him, otherwise he would lose their favor.
Here, Jahmaal and I discuss his no-nonsense approach to coaching and what authenticity means to him. Straight out of the gate, we get into what life was like for Jahmaal growing up and how it all led him to where he is today. We talk about how he’s overcome struggles and failures and offer advice for those looking to face themselves to get ahead in both life and business. Jahmaal and I wrap things up with a chat about his favorite books and movies, recommendations you won’t want to miss.
