In last week's webinar, I took everyone on a virtual tour through my business to see exactly what free and low-cost tools I use to run my business for about $100/month. I didn't start out spending that amount though, especially in the beginning when I was only making a few dollars here and there on my business.
Even though my business has truly expanded over the last few years, the most important thing for me is this: I resisted the pressure to expand my overheads in proportion to my earnings.
The normal trajectory goes like this... in the beginning you don't have any income, so you don't have any money to spend. But as you start earning, a voice starts to nag in the back of your mind "shouldn't I upgrade and do things legit."
This is the voice that tells you the $300/month payment to Infusionsoft is so worth it because your biz crushes are all using the platform. Or the voice that tells you that until you start using Photoshop, ZenDesk, WebinarJam, (insert other helpful but expensive service) you'll still be an impostor.
I consider myself a nice mix of coupon-cutting cheap and Ill-pay-for-something-LOVE spendy. So here's what I did: as I started to increase my earnings, I sat down and prioritized a list of things that I'd have to pay for but would make my business life so much easier and compared that to cheaper options that maybe required a bit of a learning curve (free Google hangouts vs. WebinarJam for example) and used my logic and intuition to make smart choices.
I'm a true bootstrapper by nature and don't really enjoy paying for things that I know I can do myself. But there are some things that for me are worth paying for (like an accountant next year so I can finally stop doing my taxes myself!)
