Episode #64: Nathan Winston — When Quitting Isn't the OptionHis prosthetic broke.
The game didn't stop.
Neither did he.
There are moments when life gives you a reason to stop.
Nathan Winston learned how to turn those moments into reasons to keep going.
In Episode #64 of the B.U.I.L.T. D1FF3R3NT Studio Podcast, Coach Randy sits down with author, speaker, coach, and former professional baseball player Nathan Winston for a conversation about resilience, faith, confidence, preparation, and what happens when adversity forces you to discover who you really are.
Nathan was born with a rare condition called Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, and his left leg was amputated when he was four years old.
But Nathan didn't build his identity around what was missing.
He built it around what was possible.
He competed in football, basketball, and baseball alongside everyone else—and eventually became a professional baseball player.
But the part of Nathan's story that may matter most happened when nobody was watching.
During a high school basketball game, a screw came loose in his prosthetic.
Nathan went into the locker room.
Pulled out an Allen wrench and duct tape.
Fixed it himself.
And went back into the game.
Another time, his prosthetic foot cracked the night before he was scheduled to pitch.
He couldn't get it repaired.
So Nathan built a homemade splint, wrapped it in duct tape, tested it throughout the night—and took the mound the next day.
That's not motivation.
That's preparation meeting identity.
This episode goes deeper than sports.
It's a conversation about:
• Building confidence before adversity arrives
• Developing systems that keep you moving when plans collapse
• Turning discomfort into a training ground instead of a stop sign
• Why preparation creates options under pressure
• The relationship between faith, resilience, and identity
• Helping young athletes separate who they are from what happens to them
• Why the right people, habits, and environment matter when pursuing the next level
• Nathan's Next Level Mindset: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable until you get comfortable.”
Nathan also shares the philosophy behind his upcoming memoir, Next Level Mindset, and why his message today is centered on helping others keep pushing forward.
This episode is for the student-athlete facing a setback.
It's for the parent wondering how to prepare a child for adversity they cannot prevent.
It's for the coach trying to develop the person underneath the uniform.
And it's for anybody who's ever wondered:
“Do I have what it takes to keep going when the plan breaks?”
Nathan's story gives us an answer.
You don't have to control every circumstance.
But you can train how you respond to it.
If you did that consistently—if you trained your mindset, clarified your direction, strengthened your habits, and prepared for the moments nobody can predict—imagine how differently you would walk into pressure.
Welcome to the B.U.I.L.T. D1FF3R3NT Studio Podcast—where we don't just talk about success… we train it.
Handle today with intention.
That’s how champions are built. 💪🔥
