Hebrews 9:11–14 teaches that when Christ appeared as the High Priest of the good things to come, He brought a better and perfect sacrifice. Unlike the earthly priests who entered an earthly sanctuary with the blood of animals, Christ entered the greater heavenly sanctuary once for all, offering His own blood. His sacrifice was not temporary or limited—it accomplished eternal redemption for those who believe in Him. This shows us that our salvation does not depend on repeated sacrifices or human efforts, but on the finished work of Jesus Christ. The passage also emphasizes the transforming power of Christ's blood. If the blood of animals could provide outward ceremonial cleansing, how much more can the blood of Christ cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we may serve the living God? When Christ appeared, He dealt not only with the outward effects of sin but with the guilt and burden within us. Therefore, believers can approach God with confidence, knowing that Christ has paid the price completely, cleansed us from sin, and given us freedom to live a life devoted to serving God.

Moses is on his way to demand freedom for God's firstborn son when the Lord meets him at an inn and seeks to kill him. Why? Because the man sent to consecrate a nation had never consecrated his own son. It took his wife to do what he refused to do. Nehemiah needed to see the scope of the great task for himself before he shared his burden and vision with the others.

Yet Peter's first epistle begins this way: He tells his readers, scattered throughout the Roman world, all about themselves. Why? Clearly the apostle is burdened that his readers never forget who they are, whose they are, and where they're headed. If you forget who you are and whose you are and where you're headed... well, you're not going to think rightly, nor live rightly, in a world that seems increasingly strange to you. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope...," 1 Peter 1:3 (LSB). Peter writes to remind homeward-bound Christians of the living hope that is theirs—and ours—as those who are chosen, scattered and tested. Our passage this morning comes from Exodus chapter 18, verses 13 to 27. So we're taking a pause in the gospel of John, because we're installing Mike Coughlin as the elder this morning. Gracious and holy God, open up the scriptures to us, speak to us through your word. May Jesus Christ speak to us through the cloud, from heavens through his most holy and set apart sacred scriptures.
