If you have ever been on a football team on any level, one thing all coaches do is use inspiring stories and messages to motivate their teams, whether that be to have their team hone their focus, or to help their team gain a competitive edge.

In this episode, I share a story that Head Coach Ron Rivera shared with our Carolina Panthers team back in 2011. In that team meeting, Coach Rivera shared a story about Hernando Cortez and how he led his men into Mexico for battle with the Aztecs.

The message Coach Rivera shared with us at that meeting wasn’t a history lesson, he was relaying a message about commitment, and about having complete buy-in. At the time when coach shared this story, we were having an up and down year, and it was the point of the season, where guys either start to checkout, because it doesn’t look like you’re going to make the playoffs or they lean in and do everything they can for that last playoff push.
