  • 1: From Teacher to Neuroscientist with Staci Danford

Staci Danford is a one of a kind mix of joy and neuroscience. She started her career as a teacher and after 25 years realized she needed a change. Listen as she shares her story and how she pulled herself out of the pit of burnout.

As a teacher she was all in. She was dedicated to making sure her students got the absolute best of her and knew that they had someone in their corner. She always had the most exciting classroom and she spent much of her free time grading and providing feedback.

All of this to the detriment of her home life. Her own kids didn't get the same attention because she was so focused on her kids at school. After the demise of her marriage she knew she had to make some changes. But what should she do?

A former student of hers gave her the motivation to go back to school and become an educational neuroscientist. She'd always loved everything about the brain and now she studies it!

Her story is amazing and I loved how she came out of burnout a stronger woman. Listen in to hear it all and get your dose of positivity and joy.

  • 13: Burntout to Badass Season 1 Wrap Up

Your most immediate need is to recover enough so that you can make the next best step! Which is why I'm leaving you this season with some tangible takeaways that you can use to create space in your life. If you find yourself in that deep dark hole of burnout, then listen in!

First things first, you need to know that the word "No" is a complete sentence. If you cannot take on one more shift or one more project, then tell your boss no. Not in a cranky toddler kind of way, but in a real and self-preserving way.

In fact, once you've said no, give them an acceptable alternative. Listen in to hear a few examples, but don't just say no and walk away. Give them other options for their request, they'll appreciate it and you will be establishing new boundaries.

Another seriously important part of this is learning how to express your needs at work. Then asking more questions to clarify the situation. If you can't express your needs and ask the right questions to dig deeper into uncomfortable situations, then it's time to do some work.

Burnout often stems from having blown out all of your boundaries. It's time to re-establish them. If your attempts at communication aren't well received, then it may be time to start firing off your warning shots.

Listen in to hear all the goodness and then shoot me an email. What would you like to see in the next season of Burntout to Badass?

"Most of us are traditionally employed, highly intelligent, highly motivated, and we're highly compensated, but we are hitting the wall." Dr. Errin Weismann

    In this episode:

[01:07] Welcome to the last show of season 1!

[02:02] I am going to give you some tangle takeaways to reclaim some power at work.

[02:20] #1 is no. No is a complete sentence.

[03:27] #2 give them an acceptable alternative.

    [04:06] #3 express your needs.

[05:29] #4 ask more questions for clarification.

[06:27] #5 communicate your warning shots, listen as I explain.

[09:08] Thank you for listening to season 1!

  • 12: Developmental Psychologist Turned Coach with Dr. Sasha Heinz

For some women the true struggle with burnout stems from the knowledge that they put themselves in that position. That's how Dr. Sasha Heinz felt. She had pushed so hard for so long that when she realized she was completely depleted and had no one but herself to blame, it felt like a sticking point for moving forward.

Which is when she started to realize that her sticking point was an area of work that she needed to tackle. After finally reaching the pinnacle and receiving her doctorate but not feeling the joy that should have come with it, she started her burnout work.

Her goal was always to become a coach. Helping other people make impactful change in their lives was extremely important to her. So she began to do her own work and it has made her an even stronger coach.

Listen as she shares her story and how she continues to approach and battle burnout. There's a reason we have to go through our struggles. Just remember to take a step back once you're through and see what there was to learn.

"There is so much power in witnessing other people's experiences so that you recognize everyone has the same affliction and that is that we have a human brain and there is nothing wrong with you." Dr. Sasha Heinz

    In this episode:

[01:50] Welcome to the show, Dr. Sasha Heinz!

[02:00] Dr. Heinz shares what she brings to the world.

[03:06] People learn more from watching other people get coached than they do when they are being coached themselves.

[04:35] Her experience with burnout and what it felt like to her.

[07:15] You can stop at any point, but we tell ourselves there is no backing out.

[09:38] How she felt when she got her Ph.D.

[12:41] She always wanted to be a coach from day one.

[18:01] Going through the struggle forces you to come face to face with the fact that you need to recognize your work is the relationship you have with yourself.

[20:08] "The burnout isn't from taking action it's from our mental messiness."

[22.06] Thank you for being on the show!

  • 7: Covid Physician Burnout with Dr. Jozi McGowan

Burnout can affect us at any stage in our medical journey. For so many it starts in residency, but what if there was a way to be better prepared before you ever get to residency. That's exactly what Dr. Jozi McGowan helps medical students to do, so it came as a bit of a shock when she realized that she too was experiencing burnout.

Dr. Jozi received her medical degree and then went into medical education. There she helps counsel and mentor students to give them information and perspective about their aspirations.

While she isn't practicing per se, there is still a ton of pressure and when Covid happened she lost all of her typical coping mechanisms. Her colleagues and husband noticed the differences in her and she knew she had to make a change.

As luck would have it, I'd reached out to her through LinkedIn and as our relationship grew, she found the coping mechanisms she needed. The Burntout to Badass came out and she was determined to be in the course.

Listen in to hear her whole story and what life is like now that she's found new ways to cope with the burnout she's found in medical education.

"You become the back burner and it sort of slips away and you don't' even realize how much you are going through the burnout rabbit hole." Dr. Jozi McGowan

    In this episode:

[01:31] Welcome to the show, Dr. McGowan!

  • 6: Overcoming Patriarchal Stress Disorder with Dr. Valerie Rein

When your body starts mimicking the symptoms of a stroke, you know that there is something seriously wrong. Dr. Valerie Rein was working and moving and constantly on the go when one day her body just stopped. She shares her burnout story and why she feels that for women burnout goes beyond individual experience.

It wasn't until she was laying in the hospital and still working since she could get more done away from her phone that she knew something was wrong. First, that she was still working despite having a potentially life threatening condition. Second, that she was there at all.

Her experience led her on a path toward mind-body trauma healing that has truly transformed her life and others. She has been a leader on exposing the existence of intergenerational transmission of trauma, specifically when related to women.

For millennia women have been oppressed. Oppression is a traumatic experience. Women across the world carry this trauma around as it has been passed down in our DNA.

This conversation was fascinating but what's even more fascinating is that there is evidence-based, scientific data available to back up the existence of Patriarchal Stress Disorder in women. Listen in to learn more and definitely grab a copy of Dr. Valerie's book!

"A Woman has always been punished for power or reaching for her authentic desires." Dr. Valerie Rein

    In this episode:

[01:41] Welcome to the show, Valerie!

[02:06] Her background, the question that defined her life and her work in the world.

[06:02] Dr. Valerie speaks about a woman sharing that she was upset that she didn't have covid.

[06:47] What burnout looked like to her.

[10:13] She wanted to know what kind of trauma we could all have that we weren't aware of.

[13:02] "It doesn't matter how successful I am, if I don't feel safe, my body is going to keep reacting to this."

[17:16] Dr. Valerie reflects on the feather moments she had.

[20:06] Community is the bond that sets all the exercises and changes into place.

[24:12] Connection is a basic human need.
