Conversation between Suleiman Mamutov, Viliuia Choinova, Selbi Durdiyeva, and Lilia Yuldasheva on self-advocacy of decolonial and indigenous activists in the times of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and ongoing occupation of indigenous lands.

This is the second part of a two-chapter episode of the Bur'yan podcast, dedicated to the critical approaches to human rights discourse and major international law institutions. After discussing the historical and political context of the establishment of international law in its contemporary form in the first part of the talk, we shift to today’s realities and personal experiences of our speakers. 

Russia, leveraging its permanent Security Council member status with a veto right, uses international law platforms to lobby its interests and promote state propaganda. That includes denial of indigenous peoples’ struggles and human rights violations both within its internationally recognised borders and in occupied Ukrainian lands. 

Viliuia Choinova, activist from the Sakha Republic, and Suleiman Mamutov, activist from Crimea, share stories of advocacy for their peoples’ rights and, more broadly, reflections on the contemporary state of international law institutions. Selbi Durdiyeva adds her observations on inequalities embedded in the very core of international law structures, and on hope as a political emotion that gives resources to fight back. 

Our speakers address the threats and repressions faced by indigenous peoples. They discuss what actions can still be taken within the current realities and explore the possibilities that international law institutions offer for building solidarity and finding support despite various obstacles. Often, this support comes from other indigenous groups and their representatives.

Conversation between Lilia Yuldasheva, Suleiman Mamutov, Selbi Durdiyeva, and Viliuia Choinova on what decolonial critique can offer for the better understanding of the history, conceptual framework, and institutions of modern-day international law and human rights. 

This is the first part of a two-chapter episode of the Bur'yan podcast, dedicated to the critical approaches to the history of human rights discourse and major international law institutions — the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the Security Council as one of its bodies — that were created after World War II by its victors. 

Who was excluded from the process of creating what we now know as the human rights framework? This framework — its conceptual apparatus, legal basis, and institutions — was supposedly designed to represent the interests and struggles of people around the world. However, the coloniality embedded in the core of international law from the start manifests itself through the exclusion of various groups of people and the reproduction of existing hierarchies.

As one such group, indigenous and stateless peoples have, from the start, fought for structural change and the reconceptualization of the key terms and the entire epistemology of human rights. They demand recognition of a more complex political system that includes not only nation-states but also a variety of human and non-human relations and communities.

Discussion between Elnara Nuriieva-Letova and Alexandr Murtazayev on the methods of Soviet and Russian oppression against indigenous peoples, ways of Crimean Tatar resistance, and solidarity within the Crimean Tatar national movement and beyond

In this episode, Alex and Elnara talk about Soviet and Russian persecution of Crimean Tatars and the different strategies of collective Crimean Tatar resistance, past and present. They share family stories and discuss some of the most prominent figures of the movement. 

Most importantly, they speak of solidarities, both within the Crimean Tatar national movement and beyond it. This conversation, despite dealing with such painful topics as political repressions and ethnic cleansing, was warm and full of hope and admiration for the activists, their courage, and determination.

In this episode of the Bur’yan podcast, we want to focus on the events of the 2nd half of the XX century, such as the return of Crimean Tatars to Crimea, the emergence of the Crimean Tatar national movement, as well as the recent developments of the XXI century, such as the occupation of Crimea, and the repressions against Crimean Tatars in the occupied peninsula. We will also discuss the prospects for the decolonization of Crimea and possible actions by the international community that could affect the current situation of the Crimean Tatars.

Антиядерное движение Казахстана напрямую связано с историей Семипалатинского полигона: крупнейшего в Советском союзе места испытания ядерных вооружений, активного с 1949 по 1989 годы. Советские власти держали местных житель:ниц в неведении об угрозе радиоактивного загрязнения и вреде проводимых на полигоне испытаний для их здоровья. 

К закрытию полигона привело общественное движение «Невада-Семей», одно из самых заметных и влиятельных эколого-политических движений позднего СССР. На протяжении более 30 лет активист:ки, ученые, общественные деятель:ницы Казахстана борются за ядерное разоружение, справедливость и поддержку для пострадавших, недопущение возобновления ядерных испытаний и свалок радиоактивного мусора. 

Мы пригласили к разговору представитель:ниц разных поколений антиядерной борьбы в Казахстане, чтобы поговорить об истории их активистской и исследовательской работы, сегодняшних вызовах и проблемах, а также ценности межпоколенческой и транслокальной солидарности.

В октябре 2024 года в Казахстане прошел референдум о строительстве в стране АЭС. Объявленные результаты говорят о том, что большинство казахстанцев — чуть более 71 процента — проголосовали за постройку станции. Независимые журналист:ки и общественные организации сообщают о многочисленных нарушениях как во время публичных дискуссий и дебатов до референдума, так и во время самого голосования. Среди возможных строителей АЭС — РОСАТОМ, а значит, оно входит в интересы российской власти. Поэтому завершающую часть нашего разговора мы посвятили российскому влиянию на политику Казахстана в отношении ядерной энергетики и борьбе с этим влиянием.

Elnara Nuriieva-Letova, Crimean Tatar cross-media activist, author and publicist, project manager of UA:SOUTH and CEMAAT of Crimea Media Platform, talks to Elmaz Alimova, Chevening Scholar, MSc student of Human Rights and Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Martin-Oleksandr Kisly, a Ukrainian historian of Crimea and Crimean Tatars with a focus on Soviet and post-Soviet periods.

In this episode of the Bur’yan podcast, we will talk about Crimean Tatars, who, along with Crimean Karaites and Krymchaks, are one of the indigenous peoples of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. We are going to discuss the history, culture and identity of Qirimli to understand the nature of repressions against Crimean Tatars that have been carried out on the occupied peninsula since 2014. After all, these repressions are not something new; they are a part of russia's violent colonization of Crimea, which has been going on for over 250 years.

Yivha Zban’, a Ukrainian-born decolonial activist and artist, and Lilia Yuldasheva, a decolonial researcher and cultural worker talk to Svitlana Matviyenko, a scholar, whose research and teaching are focused on information and cyberwar; media and environment; infrastructure studies; digital militarism, practices of resistance, and nuclear cultures, including the Chornobyl Zone of Exclusion. 

While planning this episode, the authors thought that the topics of nuclear colonialism, in particular, soviet nuclear politics and russian nuclear terrorism would be at the center of the conversation. But eventually, it went further and included other trajectories, catching the diversity of the scales and dimensions of colonialism. So, they also speak about how it affects matter (land, air, water, plants, bodies) and various aspects of human and non-human lives such as temporalities, imaginations, emotions, and futures.
