Business for Humans episodes

  • Quantum Leaps vs Microshifts

We all want quantum leaps. It’s our human nature, our Western work ethic, to move further faster; to 10x our business instead of 1x’ing it. We want to grow and earn without needing time to grow and learn. We want to take pills to lose weight tomorrow instead of changing our habits and taking a little off each day.

A quantum leap is defined as an “abrupt transition” from one energy state to another. We think we want the thing right now, but in the case of lottery winners, we see how that abrupt transition throws them off and forces them to revert back to their original energy state by losing all of their money. But we want to win the lottery, it feels easy; we want to jump the shark and skip the steps and get to the life we want and skip the pain and resistance.

In this episode, you will learn how focusing on micro-shifts, as tedious as it might feel, will better prepare you for arriving at your goal.

What type of micro-shifts can you be focused on in your life or business?

  • Client Conversations: Having Emotions and Doing it Anyway, with Eduardo Gil

In today’s episode Jaime talks with her client Eduardo Gil, a Global Brand Manager who came to Jaime looking for leadership guidance and a way to connect more deeply with his work. In their very first discovery call, Jaime noticed that what seemed to hold Eduardo back was fear.

Since identifying that one emotion, Eduardo learned tools through his coaching journey that helped him live alongside fear, and other emotions, without reacting or letting them control him. This work helped him as a leader and collaborator in his company.

Eduardo describes himself as: “an advocate of positive thinking, a creative and energetic team player and a self-motivated, action-oriented person,” all of the traits that Jaime believes help her clients go further faster in their work with her.

If emotions are standing in the way of you having success as a leader motivating teams, take a listen.

  • The Other Side of Procrastination

Today’s episode is an important one for anyone who has struggled with getting things done. Procrastination is a manifestation of your fear of failure. If you don’t take action, you can’t fail.

One of the hidden ways we procrastinate that feels productive, is to read books and take courses instead of taking action. Doing those things AND taking action isn’t buffering, but if we do those things in place of taking action, you are likely afraid of moving forward just in case there is a failure on the other side.

Jaime talks through three ways to get to the other side of procrastination:

    1. Have awareness
    2. Let your fears come to the surface, without judgement, write them out
    3. Create a plan for getting around those fears
    4. Lean into your support people and available resources to move forward, you aren’t alone.
    5. Look at your fears objectively and look at the solutions so that you can move forward despite the fear.

    6. Client Conversations Overcoming Fear and Insecurity with Shemaine Doyle

Jaime’s client, Shemaine Doyle of Brave, left the corporate world in 2022 to start a business. Fear and insecurity were at the front and center of every decision. Fear had stopped her before. The fear of scarcity as a mother and wife, combined with the insecurity of not knowing if she had the right skills to lead a branding agency, had kept her from making the leap.

And then she started managing her mind. Recognizing the negative thoughts and stories that weren’t supportive, that slowed her down and made her question herself.

Once Shemaine started applying coaching tools to shift those thoughts, her fear and insecurity completely disappeared.

      She’s no longer afraid of:

      1. Sales conversations
      2. Networking
      3. Presenting to groups of executives
      4. Hiring the right people to be able to scale the business
      5. It all just evaporated. But it took time and effort and patience with herself to retrain her brain. She went from feeling like she had to work 50 hours a week to realizing her skills and talents and outcomes aren’t tied to hours. She could work 10 hours and take a vacation and it in no way stood in the way of her success.

Through her journey, Shemaine realized that mindset is as critical to a successful business as anything else. It all starts there.

      6. Managing Difficult Conversations with Your Staff

People naturally move away from discomfort, so when there’s a conversation you know you need to have, it’s normal to want to avoid it.

But what if you went into the conversation thinking it would be a great way to realign your relationship with that person rather than thinking it would be hard? It might actually go well and improve your rapport with one another.

Reframing your mindset is a great way to start going towards, rather than away from, these type of conversations with your staff.

In this episode, you will learn the three most important things to remember in a conversation with a staffer who isn’t quite meeting the mark:

        1. Know the outcome you are hoping for from the conversation
        2. Be clear
        3. Be kind
        4. Be honest
        5. If you are a leader, it is your responsibility to give your team the tools they need to grow, the patience to let them get there, and the time needed from you to commit to their growth.

It feels easier to put off tough conversations, but putting them off just causes more stress and misalignment. Set clear expectations and let your people rise to the occasion.

And if you already know they aren’t the right fit for the role, be honest about that, too. Don’t string people along; either find them a new role or let them find an environment where they will have a chance to thrive.

        6. What Happens if I Get Sick?

As a small business owner, it can be hard to take a break. Particularly if you don’t have a team to pick up the work when you’re out.

When Covid hit the world in 2020, it was taken seriously. Everything slowed down. We started respecting sick days and allowing people to rest and recover. If someone had Covid we wouldn’t expect them to work.

What happened to respecting sick days? Why are we all back to the grind again?

In today’s episode, Jaime talks about contracting Covid and feeling pressure to continue working. Where does that pressure come from? Why do we feel guilt or that we need to prove something? Why don’t we allow ourselves rest?

Jaime teaches us how to maintain our boundaries so that we put ourselves and our health first:

          1. Take all work apps off of your phone. There’s no need for a stress hit from work during your downtime.
          2. Set an away message when you’re sick, and don’t be tempted to check emails or respond to texts, there’s nothing so urgent that can’t wait a few days (unless you work in the healthcare or emergency response field).
          3. Don’t do laundry or clean (if you are lucky enough to have a partner to help). Lean on your people and don’t feel obligated, even when you’re feeling better but still not 100%. Take the pressure off of yourself.
          4. It’s important as a leader to lead by example, to show your team that it’s ok to take time off when they are sick, show them by taking time off when you’re sick.

                • Stop beating yourself up and start going forward
                • Build confidence by doing what you say you will do
