Anglo American Platinum is investing 100 million dollars in two offshore venture capital funds to find new technologies to unlock new uses of platinum group metals. Power utility, Eskom and unions have been at the wage negotiation table since 10 May. Today Eskom presented unions with two options, the first option involves a 7.5% wage increase for the first year, 6.5% for the second year and 6.25% in the third year. Option two involves, 7% for this year, 7% for the next year and 6.5 in the third year with housing still linked to CPI. Trade union, Solidarity has accepted the second option while NUM and Numsa are yet to decide. The telecommunications space is looking up, Liquid Telecom has signed an agreement with Telecom Egypt which will enable it to build a terrestrial fibre network from Cape Town to Cairo. Meanwhile, investment bank, JP Morgan says that the second half of this year will be a "defining period for regulatory risk" in the telecommunications sector but says that Telkom is best positioned to weather the storm. Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx joined Business Day TV on the line to discuss the significance of the MOU signed by Liquid Telecom and Telecom Egypt and regulatory risk in South Africa's telecom sector.

South Africa has raised concerns with the US over possible duties on vehicle and vehicle component imports following President Trump's decision to impose import duties on steel and aluminium. The DTI has pointed out that the imposition of these tariffs will erode benefits that South Africa is supposed to be enjoying under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act. Manufacturing production rose by over 2% in May, while mining production dropped by over 2%. Added to this, consumer confidence topped from its record high. South Africa's tourism sector seems to be losing its lustre. Last year, the sector contributed 2.9% to GDP, a larger contribution than that of agriculture but smaller than that of other industries such as construction and mining. The World Travel and Tourism Council forecasts that the sector's contribution to GDP will rise by 2.4% this year but the latest tourism and migration statistics casts some doubt on SA even hitting that target. This, as we see less overseas tourists visiting the country, less tourists from the SADC region and less tourists from broader rest of africa too.
