Group Five has had a tough first half, with problems and delays at its Kopone power station project in Ghana, compounded by tough conditions at home - as well as retrenchments costs. Revenue for the six months to December fell nearly 15% to R4.9 billion and headline earnings per share weakened from a loss of 310 cents to 781 cents. It hasn't declared an interim dividend. The rally of JSE real estate stocks came to an end last week with the SA listed property index slumping by more than 21% in the first quarter, resulting in more than R200 billion wiped off the sector's market capitalisation. This was largely driven by a sell-off in the share prices of Resilient Reit on the back of alleged share manipulation. But property stocks are making a comeback after Resilient was cleared of any irregular action. Deputy Director General at Treasury, Monale Ratsoma has been appointed Head of the BRICS New Development Bank for the African Regional Center. He officially steps into the position next week Monday. It's been said that the bank will be beneficial to South Africa in terms of assisting with additional funding for large infrastructure projects, as the bank grows, it hopes to be in a position to provide loans for infrastructure funding to other African countries as well. The World Bank released its eleventh edition of the South Africa Economic Update and lifted the country's GDP forecast to 1.4%, up from its September forecast of 1.1%. The international financial institution however has warned that we still need policy interventions to stimulate competition and create the fiscal space needed to eventually build a skilled labor force in this modest growth environment. Marek Hanusch, Senior Economist at the World Bank joined us on the line for more insight into the economic update.

Unlisted retailer, Edcon has former Massmart CEO, Grant Pattison at its helm with the tough challenge of restoring Edcon to its former glory. The company is in talks to refinance over R2 billion of its debt as it pursues a turnaround strategy - now Ramaphoria is waning, while the business mood has improved, it is starting to slip, retail sales is rising at a slower pace and consumers are under pressure with the VAT increase. Regulators around the globe have been grappling with how to tax and manage the cryptocurrency market. The South African Revenue Services has recently clarified its stance on cryptocurrency saying that that all cryptocurrency including Bitcoin will be treated as part of an individual's taxable income and individuals will therefore have to declare its gains and losses as normal tax rules will continue to apply to cryptocurrencies. Andrew Wes, Senior Manager of Legal Counsel at SARS spoke with Business Day TV to elaborate on the decision.

Iqbal Surve's Sagramatha Technologies has pushed back its JSE listing date to later this week, meanwhile the Amabhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism has found that the listing is merely a ploy by Surve to use other people's money to plug a R2.3 billion hole in his media balance sheet as he tries to save Independent.
