At the start of 2020, the West African country of The Gambia was emerging from decades of dictatorship and optimistic about a future of democracy, tourism, and international investment. Then COVID-19 hit, and in common with most of Africa, the country adopted the WHO's guidance to lock down. This was an economic, social and developmental disaster, argue The COVID Consensus author Toby Green and Gambian historian and broadcaster Hassoum Ceesay, and the subsequent expropriation of the country's resources constiute a form of neocolonialism.

The passage from expropriation to exploitation - the seizing of value by force, to its being drawn from nominally freely offered paid labour - is, for Marx, the passage to capitalism. Yet the first of the "exes" never quite goes away. Legendary socialist feminist and Marxist theorist Nancy Fraser joins TPS to discuss how this core insight can offer an overdue reassessment of the left's current canards on the family, race, the environment, and 'the political'. This is a big one! Subscribe now on Patreon for audio and video versions of the full interview!

Subscribe on Patreon NOW for the complete video versions of the #TPSRaceReckoning series and more. Remi Adekoya, a former journalist and academic whose working life has spanned Nigeria, Poland, and the UK, joins #TPSRaceReckoning to discuss his provocative new book. It's Not About Whiteness, It's About Wealth argues that the focus of current antiracist projects on personal bias (still more the cultural baggage of 'whiteness') is wrongheaded, and that racism will remain until the wealth discrepancy and underdevelopment of the countries in which most black people reside is overcome.

Adolph Reed jr and Walter Benn Michaels have waded through every accusation under the sun to commit to a class-first analysis of race and racism. They join TPS 'Race Reckoning' to discuss everything from why anti-discrimination campaigns are right wing, the legacy of Charles Murray and scientific racism, Adolph's work on the Bernie Sanders campaigns, and the failure of BLM, through to the significance of Rachael Dolezal and 'transracialism'. Their new book is No Politics But Class Politics.
