I Buy Myself Flowers

Buying Myself Flowers Was Never About the Flowers

Listen Later

For years, buying myself flowers every Sunday was my ritual - a simple reminder that I didn't need anyone else's permission to celebrate myself, care for myself, or choose beauty in my own life. But one painful moment completely changed what that ritual meant.

In this first episode of The Reclamation Season, I share the story behind the argument that left me questioning the parts of myself I believed were too messy to be loved. For so long, I convinced myself that my anger made me unworthy, but that day I realized something that transformed not only my self-love ritual but my relationship with myself.

Because buying myself flowers was never really about the flowers.

It was about learning to extend compassion to the parts of myself I had spent years criticizing, hiding, and trying to fix.

Together, we'll explore where our beliefs about being "too much" come from, why those beliefs deserve to be questioned, and how reclaiming the parts we've rejected can become the deepest form of self-care.

IN THIS EPISODE

  • Why true self-care isn't about perfection - it's about staying in a relationship with yourself, even in your messiest moments.

  • The story behind the Trader Joe's parking lot that forever changed the meaning of "buying myself flowers."

  • How limiting beliefs convince us that certain parts of ourselves are unlovable and where those beliefs often begin.

  • A practical exercise to reconnect with the part of yourself you've been criticizing

  • How learning to tend to your inner parts creates greater emotional awareness, healing, and healthier relationships with others.

THE PARTING GIFT

"How do you talk to yourself when you make a mistake?"

Consider not only how you speak to yourself, but how you speak to the part of you that feels like it failed. Is your inner voice kind? Supportive? Compassionate? What would change if you spoke to yourself the way you would speak to someone you deeply love?

THIS WEEK, BUY YOURSELF FLOWERS BY...

Choosing one part of yourself you've labeled as "too much," "messy," or "unlovable." Write that part a letter reminding it that it is worthy of love, then honor it with a small act of care - whether that's buying yourself flowers or simply giving that part the compassion it's been waiting for.

Episode Reflection Exercise:

  • Journal about a part of yourself you've struggled to accept.

  • Ask yourself: Where did I first learn this part of me wasn't lovable?

  • Write that part a compassionate letter.

  • The next time you buy yourself flowers, intentionally dedicate them to that part of yourself.
