This week I’m talking all about buying quality gear. I had some trouble recently replacing items that broke after a long time. I had a can opener that was more than ten years old and a mixing bowl that was probably as old. When replacing both the replacements immediately broke.
I had to end up doing a lot of research to find a replacement for the can opener that would work. I still haven’t replaced the bowl yet.
My main point in this episode was to document the sudden drop in the quality of goods. Quality has been going down in many things for a long time. However, it seems that the decrease got much worse post-pandemic.
There are a few ways to ensure your buying quality. The first is that you have to make better more informed decisions. My old method for buying things was to get the second cheapest one. For things that don’t matter.
An example is toilet paper. The cheapest tp you can get is way cheaper than the next cheapest one. And it is garbage. The next level up is a few dollars more and works just fine.
I do this for a lot of nonimportant purchases. But it doesn’t work as well anymore. I had to read a lot of reviews on amazon to come across the can opener I got.
Another great option for buying quality is to buy used. This works twofold. Products used to be made better. ANd you can get can higher end items for a cheaper price.
Good Cook Can Opener, Safe Cut Manual Can Opener, no Sharp Can Edges, Black
